The Garden Plain Township is located to the west of Whiteside County and is bordered to the west by the Mississippi on Clinton County in Iowa. Within Whiteside County, Garden Plain Township is bordered by Fulton Township in the north, Ustick Township in the northeast, Union Grove Township in the east, Fenton Township in the southeast , Newton Township in the south and Albany in the southwest Township .

US Highway 30 runs through the Garden Plain Township in an east-west direction and crosses the Mississippi from the east over the Gateway Bridge in the direction of Clinton in Iowa to the west. Along the Mississippi River Township performs the Garden Plain herein the Illinois section of the Great River Road forming Illinois Route 84 . All other roads are county roads or further subordinate and partly unpaved roads.
Two railway lines run through the Garden Plain Township, the BNSF Railway and the Union Pacific Railroad . The Union Pacific crosses the Mississippi to the west via the Clinton Railroad Bridge , which runs parallel to the Gateway Bridge .
