Gareth Daniel Noake Thomas (born February 12, 1945 in Wales - † April 13, 2016 in Surrey , Greater London ) was a British actor .

Life

Thomas grew up as the younger of two children of a lawyer ( barrister ) who was also active in the Nuremberg trials . Thomas' childhood was marked by frequent moves. After his school education in Canterbury , he studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art from 1964 . In 1967 he made his second cast debut in London's West End when the leading actor was sick. From 1968 to 1969 he was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company .

From the late 1960s he was mainly active in film and television. He has guest roles in numerous television series and small feature film roles. In the series Parkin's Patch he was seen in 22 episodes as Ron Radley . In 1976 he portrayed Shem in eight episodes of The Girls from Space . He gained fame among British television audiences for his portrayal of Roj Blake in the science fiction series Blake’s 7 . The series, which was produced in four seasons between 1978 and 1981, was seen by up to 10 million viewers at its wedding. To get around typecasting , however, Thomas dropped out of the series after the second season to rejoin the Royal Shakespeare Company and return to the theater. However, he appeared as a guest in the last episode of the third and fourth seasons. In the theater he has worked as King Lear , Cassio in Othello , Colonel Pickering in Pygmalion , Big Daddy in The Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Theseus in A Midsummer Night's Dream .

Thomas was married and had two children. He died of heart failure at the age of 71 .
