Garth Evans
Garth Evans (* 1934 in Cheshire ) is a British sculptor and professor emeritus .
life and work
Garth Evans studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London with Alfred Gerrard . Evans was a professor at the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design . In 1969, he worked with Peter Kardia, Peter Harvey and Gareth Jones on the educational experiment "The Locked Room", in which first-year students spent a day in a closed room with a work material but no work assignment. He has taught at Camberwell College of Arts , Minneapolis College of Art and Design in Minneapolis , Chelsea College of Art and Design London and Yale University in New Haven (Connecticut). In 1979 Evans left England and moved to America. From 1988 until his retirement he was professor at the "New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture".
As a sculptor and professor, he drew a link from the Anthony Caros generation to the generation of his students, Tony Cragg , Richard Deacon , Antony Gormley and Bill Woodrow , from the abstract sculpture of the 60s to the so-called object sculpture of the 80s.
Evans works with a variety of materials, including fiberglass and ceramics . Well-known work series are “12 Cones (White)” from 1968 and “Frames (Echoes)” from the 1970s.
