Herbert Gauls

Herbert Gauls (born August 13, 1930 in Koblenz ; † January 17, 2017 ) was a German photographer .

Life

At the age of six he went to the Schenkendorf School and later attended the Kaiser Wilhelm Realgymnasium in Koblenz. In 1946 he moved to Dr. Zimmermann Private Trade School . On his 20th birthday, Gauls opened the small photo shop “Herbert Gauls Photo Trade, Specialist Laboratory and Postcard Publishing House” on Münzplatz in Koblenz's old town . For decades he worked as an architecture and documentary photographer and worked as a photo journalist for the press and television .

In 1966, Gauls completed his photography master's examination in Hamburg with the top grade “Very Good”, and immediately afterwards he erected a building with photo studios and specialist laboratories in Carl-Mand-Straße in the Koblenz industrial area. In 1971 he added a 5-storey Office building enlarged. Seven years later he built the new building and today's company headquarters, a 1,000 m² photo studio in August-Horch-Strasse in Koblenz. In the same year he received his first award with the coat of arms of the city of Koblenz.

As a photographer for the Koblenz Chamber of Crafts , Gauls documented numerous exhibitions in Koblenz at the end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s, including those of the Neuwied blacksmith and metal sculptor Klaus Rudolf Werhand .

Herbert Gauls bequeathed his extensive photo archive on the recent city history with around two million negatives to the city of Koblenz on his 80th birthday in 2010. In 2012, Herbert Gauls was awarded the State of Rhineland-Palatinate's Medal of Merit by Prime Minister Kurt Beck for his voluntary work for the common good .

Herbert Gauls lived in Weitersburg , he died on January 17, 2017 at the age of 86.
