The Gauss is a former research ship of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) and the fourth and, for the time being, last research ship with this name.

history

The ship was in Travemuende on the Schlichting Shipyard as hull number built 1417th The keel was laid on June 18, the launch on November 2, 1979. The baptism took place on the same day . The godmother was Elisabeth Gscheidle, the wife of the then Federal Minister for Transport . The completion of the ship took place on May 2, 1980, on May 6 it was put into service.

The ship had six laboratories and two workshops . It offered space for 20 crew members and 12 scientists and technicians. The ship's areas of application included marine environmental protection , marine research and the testing of nautical equipment.

In 1982 the ship was presented in Monaco as the most modern research ship in the world at the time. A year later, it tested emergency buoys on the North Cape. It also took part in a Spacelab project to identify oil pollution in the world's oceans. In 1986, after the Chernobyl disaster , the Gauss were the first to determine samples of the contaminated water in the Baltic Sea . In 1995 the Gauss was able to investigate the radioactivity of the wreck of the Russian nuclear submarine K-278 Komsomolez , which sank on April 7, 1989 . She also drove a total of five times across the Atlantic to determine the ocean's climate impact.

The ship was decommissioned on November 27, 2006 after 468 missions and more than 707,000 nautical miles driven due to the downsizing of the BSH's fleet, which was necessary for cost reasons. The operating costs of the ship amounted to around 3.3 million euros annually.

After the decommissioning, the Gauss was offered for sale via VEBEG GmbH as part of a tendering process and sold to the Dutch company Fugro on February 15, 2007 for 4.25 million euros . The ship is now operated under the name Fugro Gauss under the Gibraltar flag by FUGRO OSAE in Bremen. The ship management is the responsibility of the specialized Bremen company Jasmund Shipping. It is used, among other things, for surveying work and in the offshore industry.

drive

The ship is powered by diesel-electric technology . Electricity is generated by three MaK diesel generators , each with 1,300  kW power . Two electric motors act as traction motors, which act on an electrically driven fixed propeller, behind which there is a Grim's guide wheel . The rudder blade is designed as a Becker rudder. The ship also has a gill bow thruster .
