Gebhardt von Moltke

Gebhardt von Moltke (born June 28, 1938 at Gut Wernersdorf, district of Breslau , Silesia ; † January 6, 2019 in Berlin ) was a German diplomat and President of the German-British Society .

Life and work

Gebhardt von Moltke came from the Mecklenburg noble family Moltke . His father was the landowner and ambassador Hans-Adolf von Moltke (1884–1943), on whose estate Wernersdorf he was born. His mother was Davida Countess Yorck von Wartenburg (1900-1989), the daughter of Heinrich Graf Yorck von Wartenburg .

In 1958 Moltke began studying law and economics at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . He completed his studies in 1963 with study visits to Grenoble , Berlin and Freiburg im Breisgau and passed his first state examination in the same year . Between 1963 and 1967 he did his legal clerkship and finally the second state examination . In 1968 he joined the higher foreign service , where Gebhardt von Moltke initially worked in the ministerial office of the Foreign Office in Bonn . From 1971 to 1977 Moltke worked in departments of the German embassies in Moscow and Yaoundé . He then returned to the Foreign Office, where he worked in the human resources department. Between 1982 and 1986 he worked in the political department of the embassy in Washington , whereupon he took over the management of the USA department in the Foreign Office. Thereafter, Gebhardt von Moltke became Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs at NATO in Brussels in 1991 . In 1997 Moltke was appointed ambassador to London . He held this office until 1999. This was followed by the appointment as permanent representative of the Federal Republic of Germany in the North Atlantic Council of NATO. In 2003 Moltke retired . In the same year he became the new CEO of the German-British Society .

Gebhardt von Moltke was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Birmingham in 2000 .
