The Geißstein (also Gaisstein or Gaißstein ) is a mountain in the Kitzbühel Alps and Pinzgauer Grasberge with a height of 2363  m above sea level. A. on the border between the federal states of Tyrol and Salzburg .

location

The Geißstein is located about seven kilometers southeast of Jochberg . Valley locations in the state of Salzburg are Saalbach-Hinterglemm (in the northeast), as well as Stuhlfelden and Mittersill (in the south). To the east of the Geißstein lies the Vogelalmgraben , a right side valley of the Glemmtal . In the southeast is the Stuhlfeldener Mühltal , a left side valley of the Oberpinzgau . The Bürglhütte ( 1699  m ) is also one of the most important starting points for climbing the mountain. A marked hiking trail leads from the hut over the south ridge to the summit. Alternatively, the Geißstein can go up the mountain from the 2035  m high Sintersbachscharte to the southwest via the relatively flat, grassy southwest side. Another marked path leads through the significantly steeper south-east flank, accessible from Vogelalmgraben or from the 2048  m high Schlaberstatt crossing to the north .

The Geißstein can also be reached as a ski tour in winter via the southwest route from the Bürglhütte .

According to a legend , gold was once mined at the Geißstein, and Venedians are also said to have worked here. At that time, festivals are said to have been celebrated on the Schlaberstatt, at which devils were also to be found among the musicians.

Ascent

From Stuhlfelden (standard ascent)

Start: town center ( 800  m above sea level ). Well-marked hiking trail through the Mühltal to the Bürglhütte ( 1700  m above sea level ) at the foot of the mountain, from there ascent over the south ridge to the summit. The Bürglhütte can also be reached by car via a farm road in summer. Difference in altitude 1563 m (from Bürglhütte 663 m).

From Mittersill

Start: Burkbachbrücke ( 950  m above sea level ) in the Thalbach district north of Mittersill Castle (also accessible by car). On the Arnoweg (section 2/16) along the Burkbach over the Liendlalm and the Rosswegscharte ( 2060  m above sea level ) to the Sintersbachscharte ( 2035  m above sea level ) and further on a gently sloping path to the summit (height difference 1413 m) .
