The Joint United Nations Program on HIV / AIDS ( English Joint United Nations Program on HIV / AIDS , UNAIDS ) is a project United Nations with the aim of the various HIV / AIDS - a pandemic to coordinate individual countries in the fight against AIDS activities. The organization's headquarters are in Pregny-Chambésy near Geneva, Switzerland .

An important function of UNAIDS is to collect data and the consequences of the epidemic, to record the social (living conditions of the infected) and to document the impact of the epidemic on the economy of the states.

UNAIDS supports the World AIDS Conference and publishes the Global HIV / AIDS Report twice a year .

history

It was created in 1996 from the Global Program on HIV / AIDS of the World Health Organization . HIV / AIDS cannot be fought in the medical sector alone, as it affects many aspects of human society because of the way the epidemic is transmitted and spread . In the early years of the spread of AIDS, the specialized agencies of the UN and the states each had their own programs, of which very few were pooled to increase their effectiveness. In order to better coordinate the activities of these programs, UNAIDS was founded.

The chairman was from December 12, 1994 to December 31, 2008 the Belgian Peter Piot , Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations. His successor on December 1, 2008 was Michel Sidibé , who comes from Mali and, before joining UNAIDS, worked for the United Nations Children's Fund UNICEF for 14 years . Shannon Hader was appointed Deputy Director in February 2019. Sidibé resigned in May 2019, and Gunilla Carlsson from Sweden was provisionally appointed as his successor.

For 2016, the organization had revenues of $ 229 million and expenses of $ 182 million.
