Georg Dohrn (born May 23, 1867 in Bahrendorf near Magdeburg , † March 9, 1942 in Munich ) was a German conductor and pianist .

Life

Dohrn was born in 1867 as the son of an estate manager ("Administrator"). His uncle was the zoologist Anton Dohrn . In 1904 he married Hedwig Commichau (1871–1968), daughter of a wealthy merchant family and pianist; they had two children, Klaus Dohrn , banker (* 1905 in Breslau, † 1993 in Feldkirchen-Westerham), and Barbara Dohrn, married. Behrend (* 1908, † 1998).

Georg Dohrn attended the Domgymnasium Magdeburg and the Thomas School in Leipzig . Like his grandfather Carl August Dohrn , he first studied law at the University of Leipzig , Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin . In 1891 he received his Ph.D. from Ruprecht-Karls-University of Heidelberg to the Dr. jur. During this time the composer Johannes Brahms frequented his home in Breslau and inspired him to study music. Dohrn enrolled at the Cologne Conservatory and did his military service with the 1st Westphalian Field Artillery Regiment No. 7 . In 1895 he became solo repetitor at the Weimar Court Theater and the Royal Court Theater in Munich. In 1897 he became a conductor at the city ​​theater in Flensburg. From 1898 to 1901 he was the conductor of the Kaim Orchestra in Munich.

In 1901 he became chief conductor of the Breslau Orchestra Association and the Sing-Akademie. In 1910 he was appointed professor . During his time in Breslau, Dohrn worked with musicians such as Ferruccio Busoni , Wilhelm Kempff , Siegfried Schultze, Artur Schnabel , Wilhelm Backhaus , Rudolf Serkin , Eduard Erdmann , Adolf Busch , Wladimir Horowitz , Fritz Kreisler , Bronisław Huberman , Eugen d'Albert , Ilona Durigo and Maria Ivogün together. Guest concerts have taken him to Warsaw, Frankfurt, Turin and Leipzig.

Georg Dohrn maintained a. a. close musical friendships and correspondence with Johannes Brahms , Gustav Mahler , Max Reger , Anton Bruckner and Hans Pfitzner . His second nephew was Wilhelm Furtwängler , whom he promoted musically at a young age.

In 1936 Dohrn retired because of Parkinson's disease and spent the last few years in Seeshaupt on Lake Starnberg.
