Georg Iggers

Georg Gerson Iggers (* December 7, 1926 as Georg Gerson Igersheimer in Hamburg ; † November 26, 2017 in Canterbury Woods , Amherst) was a German-American historian . Iggers was a specialist in the history of historiography and history theory , in particular German history, historicism and intercultural historiography .

Live and act

Georg Iggers came from a Jewish family, emigrated with his parents to the United States in 1938, where he attended the Universities of Richmond (VA) and Chicago and became politically active at an early age. In Chicago in 1951 he received his Ph.D. and taught from 1950 to 1963 as a professor at African American colleges in Little Rock and New Orleans , where he was involved in the civil rights movement against racial discrimination. From 1963 to 1965 he taught at Roosevelt University in Chicago. He taught at the State University of New York at Buffalo from 1965 to 1997 . From 1961 he lived with his wife Wilma partly in Göttingen , from where he was able to establish close connections with historians from the Federal Republic and the GDR , including Hans-Ulrich Wehler , Jürgen Kocka , Walter Markov and Hartmut Zwahr . He was visiting professor at universities in the USA, Europe, Australia and China. In 1999 he was visiting professor at the TU Darmstadt . The partnership between the universities of Buffalo and Darmstadt developed from the contacts between the historian Helmut Böhme , then President of the Technical University, and Iggers.

Iggers' book The German Conception of history , published in 1968, attracted international attention . The national tradition of historical thought from Herder to the present ( German history. A critique of the traditional conception of history from Herder to the present , first in 1971, last in 1997). It is considered a classic text of the critique of historicism. The history of the 20th century and the Iggers' autobiography were first published in German, the English editions and translations into other languages ​​followed a few years later. Iggers had been a co-editor of the Journal of History since 1994 .

In 2007 Iggers received the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class for his contribution to the development of German history and the deepening of German-German academic communication. He was also the recipient of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation's research award , an honorary doctorate from the University of Richmond (since 2001), the Philander Smith College in Little Rock (since 2002) and the University of Darmstadt (since 2006). In 1988, Iggers received the Erasmus Kittler Medal for his services to the University of Darmstadt .
