Georg Wilhelm Christian Albert Edward Alexander Friedrich Waldemar Ernst Adolf Duke of Braunschweig and Lüneburg, Prince of Hanover (born October 28, 1880 in Gmunden ; † May 20, 1912 in the forest near Nackel in Brandenburg) was a German prince from the House of the Welfs .

Prince Georg Wilhelm was the first-born son of the last Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Hanover , which was annexed by Prussia in 1866 , Ernst August II , Duke of Cumberland, and Princess Thyra of Denmark , daughter of King Christian IX. from Denmark . He grew up at Castle Cumberland near Gmunden and was most recently a captain in the Austrian army. He was an avid hunter and enthusiastic supporter of motor racing . In 1910 he passed his driving test in Vienna. He took part in sporting events and races several times. The prince was popular in Austria.
Due to his delicate health, Prince Georg Wilhelm spent long periods of time in Egypt , where the Welf , who was interested in ethnology and archaeological, liked to stay. The well-known Austrian pulmonologist Hermann von Schrötter often accompanied him . The Hildesheim Egyptologist Wilhelm Pelizaeus , whom he had met on the ship passages across the Mediterranean, was one of his circle of friends. His father, Duke Ernst August von Cumberland, himself visited the excavations on the Giza plateau, financed by Pelizaeus, in 1905 . In the spring of 1905 and 1909 Prince Georg Wilhelm also undertook hunting trips to the Upper Nile in what is now Sudan .
Prince Georg Wilhelm had a fatal accident while driving from Prague to Copenhagen to the funeral of his uncle King Friedrich VIII of Denmark at the wheel of his touring car in a car accident near Nackel in the Mark Brandenburg region. He was unmarried and had no children.
Prince Georg Wilhelm was buried in the mausoleum of Cumberland Castle in Gmunden.
Effects of his death
The prince's accidental death on Prussian territory and the sympathy shown by the Prussian ruling house formed the prelude to the reconciliation between the houses of the Guelphs and the Hohenzollern , which in the following year with the wedding of his younger brother Ernst August to Princess Viktoria Luise of Prussia , the only daughter of the German Emperor Wilhelm II .
