George Andrew Reisner (born November 5, 1867 in Indianapolis , Indiana , † June 6, 1942 in Giza , Egypt ) also known as "Papa George" , was an American Egyptologist .

Life

The Reisners family comes from Worms in Germany , his grandparents emigrated to the USA. 1893 studied George Reisner at the Harvard University Law , but changed shortly after the study and then studied Semitic languages . He then studied in Germany first cuneiform scripts at the University of Göttingen , then Egyptology at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-University in the "Berlin School" under Adolf Erman and Kurt Sethe .

In 1896 he returned to the United States and taught Semitic studies at Harvard University . In 1897 he took up a position at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo , where he worked for two years in the International Catalog Commission .

In 1899 he led his first expedition to Egypt and was accompanied by assistants Arthur C. Mace and Frederick William Green . During this time his excavations focused on the necropolis of Naga-ed-Deir . On behalf of Harvard University, he led excavations in Giza from 1905 to 1907 and in Nubia from 1907 to 1909 . In contrast to many colleagues of his time, Reisner documented his excavations very precisely and also made many sketches and photos. In 1914 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 1936 Reisner discovered an inscription tablet from the grave of the ancient Egyptian dog Abutiu during an expedition .

In 1929 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences .
