George Calvert, 1st Baron Baltimore (* around 1578-1580 in Kiplin , North Yorkshire , † April 15, 1632 in Lincoln's Inn Fields, London ) was an English statesman .

Calvert had been Secretary of State for Jacob I and Charles I from 1619 onwards . He maintained his position in the ministry even after he had become Catholic in 1624. He was appointed Lord Baltimore in 1625 and was given by Charles I after one of him in Newfoundland -scale colony ( Ferryland ) had failed, a strip of land on the northern border of Virginia to the present. His goal was to create a colony in which a peaceful coexistence of Catholics and Protestants was possible. When Calvert died before achieving this goal, his son Cæcilius received a patent in the form of a royal fief in 1632 to settle the country between the 40th parallel in the north and thePotomac in the south. The new colony was named Maryland in honor of the king's wife, Henriette Maria .

The city of Baltimore , founded in Maryland in 1729 , was named in honor of Calvert. His descendants maintained the colony's government until the American War of Independence . The flag of Maryland bears the colors of its family crest, as does the flags of the city of Baltimore, Baltimore County , Anne Arundel County , Calvert County , Caroline County , Howard County, and Charles County (all located in Maryland).

He was the father of Cæcilius Calvert, 2nd Baron Baltimore of Leonard Calvert and Phillip Calvert .
