George J. Mitchell

George John Mitchell , GBE (born August 20, 1933 in Waterville , Maine ) is a former American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ). He represented the state of Maine in the US Senate from 1980 to 1995 .

After attending public schools, George Mitchell graduated from Bowdoin College in Brunswick in 1954 . 1960 followed the legal exam at the Law Center of Georgetown University . In the meantime he worked from 1954 to 1956 in Berlin for the Counter Intelligence Corps of the US Army . After his admission as a lawyer in Washington, DC and Maine, he worked from 1960 to 1962 for the competition law department of the US Department of Justice ; then he was an assistant on the staff of US Senator Edmund Muskie . From 1965 he practiced as a lawyer in Portland . In 1971, he served briefly as assistant district attorney in Cumberland County .

The Democratic Party nominated Mitchell in 1974 as its candidate for election to governor of Maine. Although he was able to land with 36.3 percent of the vote in front of the Republican James S. Erwin (23.1 percent), but was in turn defeated by the independent applicant James B. Longley (39.1 percent). Mitchell was a federal attorney for the Maine County from 1977 to 1979 ; subsequently he acted as a judge at the federal district court for the same district until 1980 . His successor in this office was Conrad K. Cyr .

On May 17, 1980, Mitchell was appointed by Governor Joseph E. Brennan to succeed Senator Edmund Muskie, who moved to the Carter Cabinet as Secretary of State . The swearing-in took place two days later; thereafter he was reelected twice before he did not run again in 1994. During this time he was from 1985 to 1987 chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and from 1989 to 1995 party leader of the Democrats in the Senate.

From 1995 Mitchell was a member of the board of directors of the Walt Disney Company ; in March 2004 he took over the chairmanship of Michael Eisner and held it until he left Disney in January 2007. He was also chairman of the peace negotiations in the Northern Ireland conflict and from 1999 to 2009 Chancellor of Queen's University Belfast . He is currently a partner and chairman of the global board of DLA Piper , a major law firm.

On January 22, 2009, he was appointed Special Envoy for the Middle East by the newly elected US administration under Barack Obama . In this role he was involved in the preparations for the Middle East peace talks that were resumed in September 2010. He also headed the US delegation to the Palestine Investment Conference in June 2010. On May 13, 2011, US President Obama announced Mitchell's resignation as US special envoy for the Middle East on May 20, 2011.

In 2015 he published his memoirs under the title "The Negotiator".
