Lord Mayor of Oldenburg

In the Mayor elections in Oldenburg in 2006, Schwandner was able to just beat Dietmar Schütz ( SPD ) as a non-party candidate for the CDU with the promise to prevent the construction of the ECESchlosshöfe ” shopping center in Oldenburg. After being elected mayor, Gerd Schwandner said he was unable to keep this promise because the contractual penalty negotiated by his predecessor Schütz and the refusal of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce to locate the Swedish furniture store IKEA in the event that it had not been built would have resulted in more disadvantages for the city than a modified building . The Greens accused Schwandner of electoral fraud and then ended cooperation in the coalition that had just been formed. A voting initiative by the Greens, SPD, FDP, Die Linke and the voting community for Oldenburg failed because the CDU was united behind Schwandner.
