Gerhard Becker (pastor)

Gerhard Becker (born September 22, 1910 in Stettin ; † January 3, 2006 in Leeste ) was a German Protestant pastor and local researcher. He left behind a large number of different works of art ( printing and carving ) throughout the Pomeranian churches .

Life

education and study

In 1922 he was recruited for the ring scouts by the sons of Anklam Rector Otto Bollnow . He had a long friendship with Hermann Bollnow in particular . After graduating from high school in Anklam in 1930 , he began studying theology at the University of Greifswald in the same year, and from there in 1932 he switched to the University of Königsberg for a semester . In Greifswald he became a member of the University Guild St. Georg zu Greifswald ( German Guild ), which emerged from the youth movement .

Professional background

After studying theology, Becker began at the seminary in Stettin-Kückenmühle (belonging to Eckerberg-Nemitz) and in 1937 became a preacher in Plönzig in the Pyritz district . Together with Joachim Fuchs , Becker campaigned against the NSDAP and established an active community work. On September 28, 1937, Becker was ordained for the Provincial Association for the Inner Mission in the castle church in Stettin and was pastor in Altenhagen from 1938 to 1944 . After that he had a pastor's post on Usedom until 1948 , which he was unable to use due to his imprisonment. From 1954 he became pastor of Dersekow , where he worked as a pastor until his retirement.

Research activity

In addition to the community service, Becker was particularly concerned with the local history of Anklam and wrote some writings. He also did research on sacred art in Pomerania. After his retirement, he continued his research into town and church history in Lower Saxony.

Artistic works

In his artistic work, Becker limited himself mainly to sculptures and linocuts, but also made sketches and watercolor drawings. He placed an emphasis on biblical motifs.

Around 1985 he had his first exhibition in Halle . This was followed by exhibitions in the GDR and FRG in the 1980s . There are efforts to publish Becker's work in a catalog.
