Gerhard Küntzle (born May 6, 1955 in Bietigheim ) is a German diplomat who has been the Permanent Representative of the Federal Republic of Germany to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna since 2018 .

Life

After graduating from high school, Küntzle did community service at Karlshöhe Ludwigsburg and then studied political science and English at the University of Stuttgart , which he completed with the state examination. During this time, he completed studies at the renowned Institut d'études politiques de Paris (Sciences Po) and at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne . At times he worked as an assistant teacher in Bournemouth . In 1986 he began his preparatory service for the higher foreign service and, after completing his training as an attaché in 1988, was initially employed as a protocol officer at the Foreign Office in Bonn . He was then consul at the embassy in the People's Republic of China between 1989 and 1991 and a consultant for UNICEF , UNHCR and UNRWA in the United Nations Department at the Foreign Office from 1991 to 1995 .

This was followed by a position in the Office of Internal Oversight Services of the United Nations in New York City between 1995 and 1997 , the office for internal oversight services in the UN Secretariat . After that, Küntzle stayed in New York City and was there from 1997 to 1999 as an employee of the Permanent Representation of Germany to the United Nations at the same time as the German representative in the Fifth Main Committee (Administrative and Budget Committee) of the General Assembly of the United Nations . After his return, he was Deputy Head of the Budget Department of the Foreign Office in Berlin between 1999 and 2003 . He then worked from 2003 to 2004 as a Fellow at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University, and from 2004 to 2007 he was responsible for the budget of the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin.

Küntzle was then from 2007 to 2010 envoy at the Permanent Mission of Germany to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Vienna and between 2010 and 2012 head of organization and global planning at the Foreign Office, before he was commissioner for infrastructure from 2012 to 2015 and security of the Foreign Office was.

On September 2, 2015, Küntzle succeeded Julius Georg Luy as Ambassador and Head of the Permanent Mission to the Council of Europe and also as Consul General in Strasbourg . He has been the German ambassador to the UN in Vienna since 2018 .

Küntzle is married to Susanne Vogel-Küntzle and has three children.
