Gerhard Neumann (Germanist)

Gerhard Neumann (born June 22, 1934 in Brno , Czechoslovakia ; † December 27, 2017 in Berlin ) was a German German philologist .

Life

Gerhard Neumann attended the Thomaeum grammar school in Kempen and studied German and Romance studies from 1955 . He was born in 1963 with Gerhart Baumann at the University of Freiburg with the dissertation configuration. PhD studies on Goethe's “ Torquato Tasso . "The slightest form of criticism and intellectual subversion known to literature: the aphorism, " was his post- doctoral thesis, Ideenparadiese. Investigations on the aphorism by Lichtenberg, Novalis, Friedrich Schlegel and Goethe (1972). According to Neumann, the aphorism aims at “the mutual shaking of security of thought and feeling”.

Neumann was a language teacher at the Goethe Institute and then Professor of Modern German Literature at the Universities of Bonn (1974), Erlangen (1975), Freiburg i. Br. (1979) and Munich (1986). Since 2005 he has been an honorary professor at the Free University of Berlin .

His publications are dedicated to a. Franz Kafka , Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , Georg Christoph Lichtenberg , Heinrich von Kleist , Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann , Theodor Fontane , Karl May , Stéphane Mallarmé , Nikolaus Lenau , Hugo von Hofmannsthal , Arthur Schnitzler , Harry Graf Kessler , Paul Celan and Elias Canetti as well of poetics , philological methodology and edition science . “Apart from Goethe, no other author has occupied him in his life than Franz Kafka,” writes Ernst Osterkamp.

Gerhard Neumann had been a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences since 1991 . He was chairman of the Germanic Commission of the German Research Foundation . He died after a short illness in a Berlin hospital. Neumann left two sons, a partner and a wife.
