Gerhard Papke (born May 16, 1961 in Recklinghausen ) is a German politician ( FDP ). From May 31, 2012 to May 31, 2017, he was the 3rd vice-president of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia and was previously chairman of the FDP parliamentary group from 2005 to 2012.

Life

Papke graduated from high school in Datteln in 1981 . From 1982 to 1987 he studied economic history , political science and international law at the Ruhr University in Bochum . In 1987 he completed his studies with a Magister Artium (MA).

He obtained his doctorate in 1991. phil. on the subject of the overthrow of the Karl Arnold government by the parliamentary group of the Free Democratic Party in 1956 .

From 1994 until he moved into the state parliament on June 2, 2000, he was employed as a research assistant at the Theodor Heuss Academy of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation in Gummersbach , where he was responsible for the work area “Basics and Perspectives of Liberalism” . Between 1996 and 1999 he was also an employee of the economic policy spokesman for the FDP parliamentary group, Paul K. Friedhoff .

Papke is a member of the FDP. He was district chairman of the FDP in the Rhein-Sieg district and for many years a member of the state board and the executive board of the North Rhine-Westphalian FDP.

Gerhard Papke became a member of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia on June 2, 2000 . From 2000 to 2005 he was the economic policy spokesman for the FDP parliamentary group. From 2005 to 2012 he was chairman of the FDP parliamentary group in the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia. During this time he was also the spokesman for the main committee, media, educational affairs and a member of the committee for economics, medium-sized businesses and energy, state planning. On May 15, 2012 the parliamentary group elected Christian Lindner as his successor. At the same time, the parliamentary group nominated Papke for the office of vice-president of the state parliament. Papke did not run again in the 2017 state election . He justified this step with criticism of Lindner's political line, in particular what he considered to be too hesitant attitude towards the “Islamist threat” and “unregulated mass immigration” to Germany. In his book Another Chance for the FDP ?: Memories and Thoughts of a Companion , published in the same year, Papke describes this development.

Papke was chairman of the German-Chinese parliamentary group of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia. Since May 3, 2019 he has been honorary president of the German-Hungarian Society in the Federal Republic of Germany, which has its headquarters in Berlin and Bonn.
