The VfL Germania Leer is a traditional sports club from Leer in East Frisia with a total of about 900 members. The club has been playing in the Landesliga Weser / Ems since 2019 . Home venue is the Hoheellern Stadium in the Leeraner Oststadt.

In the 1930s, Germania was represented for three seasons in the Oberliga Weser / Jade, the top German soccer class at the time. In the 1950s and 1960s, the club played for several years in the amateur league, at that time the second highest division.

history

On September 12, 1915 the club was founded, which is initially a pure football club and is accordingly called "FC Germania Leer". The club colors are blue and white when it is founded. The first official game took place on October 31, 1915: Germania Leer is defeated by Germania Papenburg with 1: 6. In 1920 Germania was accepted into the Lower Saxony Football Association (NFV). In gratitude to the association's greatest patron, Count von Wedel, Germania changed the association's colors in 1925. Blue and white became blue and yellow, as the Wedels family coat of arms contains these colors.

In 1925 the pure football club FC Germania Leer became a multi-discipline club with the introduction of the athletics department. Accordingly, the club was renamed VfL (Association for Physical Exercise) Germania Leer. The most famous athletics personality was the former pentathlon world record holder Lena Stumpf , who started for the club in 1948. In 1930, Germania made it into what was then the highest football class - the northwest German Oberliga Weser / Jade . Here you met well-known teams such as Bremer SV and Werder Bremen . In their first league season, the people of Leer were almost immediately relegated, but were able to secure their stay in the class via the relegation games against VfB Lehe . In the following seasons, Germania Leer was firmly established in the league, with a historic 1-0 victory at Werder Bremen on October 18, 1931. The club achieved its best placement in the 1932/33 season with 4th place in the table.

For the 1946/47 season, the first-class Oberliga Niedersachsen-Nord was set up, where Germania Leer played against VfB Oldenburg , VfL Osnabrück and Werder Bremen , among others . Since the qualification for the newly created Oberliga Nord for the 1947/48 season was clearly missed, Germania then played for two years in the Landesliga Weser / Ems before relegation to the third division had to be accepted in 1949. In 1953, Germania Leer was six points ahead of the champions of the Amateur League 1 , but had to admit defeat in the promotion round against TSV Verden and SF Oesede . In 1956 Germania was again champion; this time the people from Leer prevailed in the promotion round and rose to the then second highest division, the amateur league Lower Saxony-West . VfL played at this level continuously until 1963 and always occupied a single-digit position in the table until the 1962/63 season. It was not until 1963/64 that the club became third class again due to the reorganization of the leagues following the establishment of the Bundesliga.

In 1959, following a recommendation, VfL Germania Leer hired Horst Witzler as coach, who later coached the Bundesliga clubs Borussia Dortmund and Rot-Weiss Essen , among others . A year later, Werder coach Georg Knöpfle discovered Sepp Piontek in the 3-0 victory over TSR Wilhelmshaven from Leer , who would later become the German national player. After the end of his playing career, Piontek became national coach for Haiti , Denmark and Turkey, among others . Later, the ex-German coached the Greenland national team . In 1977 Germania Leer won the championship in the Association League North under coach Bata Tijanic . In the subsequent round of promotion, VfL prevailed against SVG Göttingen 07 , SC Twistringen and MTV Gifhorn . In the following year, VfL Germania reached the playoff for the national league championship, which they lost to VfB Peine with 0: 1. Nevertheless, the club qualified for the promotion to the then highest amateur class, the Oberliga Nord . In this relegation round, however, the Tijanic-Elf failed at Bremer SV , at VfR Neumünster and at ASV Bergedorf 85 . The game against Bergedorf saw 4,500 spectators on Hoheellernweg.

In November 2009, Germania Leer withdrew from the Lower Saxony West Oberliga due to lack of funds . After the consolidation, the club made it into the Landesliga Weser / Ems in 2012. Four years later it went back down to the district league before being promoted back to the state league in 2019.

The venue is the Hoheellern Stadium in Leer , which was officially inaugurated on June 5, 1932 with a friendly against Altona 93 . Honorary member Graf von Wedel helped the association by initially leasing the site to Germania. VfL later bought the site, which is still owned by the club today.

On September 9, 2005, the 180 lux floodlight system with four masts and a total of 16 spotlights was put into operation. Since June 2007, spectators have been able to watch the games from a covered standing stand. Since the 2008/2009 season there has been a new main grandstand with around 300 covered seats and a separate block for the active fans of the Leer base . The expansion of the functional areas, which are to be integrated into the main grandstand, is still being planned.

The record attendance in the Hoheellern Stadium of 5,962 visitors was recorded on October 14, 1956 at the amateur league game against VfB Oldenburg . Then the record was 4,500 visitors who wanted to see the league promotion round game against Bergedorf 85 on May 21, 1978 . In the friendly matches, the games against Werder Bremen drew the most spectators: 5,500 visitors on September 27, 1988 and 4,800 visitors on July 10, 2006.
