Gernot Piccottini

Gernot Piccottini (born March 29, 1941 in Villach , Carinthia ; † March 27, 2018 in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee , Carinthia) was an Austrian provincial Roman archaeologist and epigraphist .

Life

After completing his doctorate in 1966, Piccottini was employed as a curator at the State Museum of Carinthia in 1968 . From 1969 to 2001 he led the excavations in the city ​​on the Magdalensberg , and from 1992 to 2001 also in Virunum (Zollfeld). On December 3, 1974, he succeeded Dr. Koschier appointed director of the State Museum of Carinthia. In 1978 he was also appointed professor at the University of Vienna . Since 1996 he was titular associate professor at the University of Graz . On the occasion of his retirement in 2001, the festschrift Carinthia Romana and the Roman World was published (Klagenfurt 2001).

Piccottini was a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute (1974), a real member of the Austrian Archaeological Institute (1991) and a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (1992).

Piccottini died in March 2018, two days before he would turn 77. He was a member of the Academic Landsmannschaft Carinthia zu Vienna and the Arminia student fraternity in Villach.

Piccottini received numerous awards for his archaeological research, which related to Carinthia and especially to the Roman city of Virunum .
