Gert Börnsen

Gert Börnsen (born February 10, 1943 in Wilster ; † May 10, 2014 in Kiel ) was a German politician ( SPD ).

Life and work

After graduating from high school in Bremen in 1964 , Börnsen studied political science , history and journalism at the Free University of Berlin . He finished his studies in 1969 with a diploma in political science. From 1970 to 1973 he was a research assistant in the SPD parliamentary group in the Schleswig-Holstein state parliament . Gert Börnsen was a managing board member of the "Schleswig-Holstein Parliamentary Society" and was a member of the administrative board of the NDR . After the end of his political career, Börnsen worked for Deutsche Telekom AG from May 1996 .

Political party

Börnsen joined the SPD in 1964. In 1968/69 he was federal chairman of the Social Democratic Union of Universities . In 1972/73 he was Deputy Federal Chairman of the Young Socialists . He was a member of the state executive committee of the SPD in Schleswig-Holstein from 1975 to 1989.

MP

From 1975 to 1996 Börnsen was a member of the state parliament in Schleswig-Holstein. Initially elected via the state list, he has represented the Kiel- Mitte constituency since 1987 . On June 13, 1995, Börnsen lost the nomination for direct candidate against competitor Jürgen Weber in an internal party vote .

From 1983 to May 1988 he was Parliamentary Managing Director of the SPD parliamentary group and then, after the change of government, succeeded the new Prime Minister Björn Engholm as chairman of the parliamentary group. In 1988 he was chairman of the SPD in the committee of inquiry into the Barschel-Pfeiffer affair . In 1989/90 he was chairman of the state parliament special committee on constitutional and parliamentary reform. In 1990/91 and from 1992 to 1996 he was also the chairman of the Parliamentary Unification Committee under Section 26 of the Constitution of Schleswig-Holstein . The state parliament elected Börnsen as a member of the ninth Federal Assembly , which re-elected Richard von Weizsäcker as Federal President on May 23, 1989 , and the 10th Federal Assembly, which elected Roman Herzog as the new Federal President on May 23, 1994 .
