Klaus Gerwien (born September 11, 1940 in Lyck , East Prussia ; † September 3, 2018 ) was a German football player . Between 1963 and 1973 he played 237 Bundesliga games for Eintracht Braunschweig and scored 31 goals, including the first Braunschweiger Bundesliga on August 24, 1963 (1st matchday) in a 1-1 draw in the away game against TSV 1860 Munich . In 1967 the six-time national player became German champions with unity.
career
Klaus Gerwien came through the stations 1. FC Wolfsburg (1954-1956), SSV Vorsfelde (1956-1958) and VfL Wolfsburg (1958-1961) to Eintracht Braunschweig for the 1961/62 season of the North Football League . The all-round player was mainly used as a winger, but also in midfield or defense. From Wolfsburg he already brought playing experience from the Oberliga Nord from the round in 1958/59. On January 18, 1959, Gerwien made his debut in a 4-2 home win against Bergedorf 85 in what was then the first-class league. Willi Giesemann played center runner in the World Cup system that was practiced at the time , and Gerwien stormed the right winger and scored two goals. At the end of the season, VfL was bottom of the Lower Saxony amateur league; the man from Vorsfelde had scored four goals in 13 league games. After two rounds with the "Wolves" in the Lower Saxony amateur league, Gerwien accepted the offer from Braunschweig for the 1961/62 round and switched to Eintracht.
The league debut with Braunschweig brought a 1-1 home draw against SV Werder Bremen on August 6, 1961 . The newcomer stormed on the left wing, Jürgen Moll as center forward and Joachim Bäse on half left; Helmut Hosung scored the goal for the hosts. Braunschweig landed in 6th place and Gerwien had scored eight goals in 28 league appearances. On the last day of the first-class Oberliga Nord, he stood out as a goalscorer in a 2-1 home win against VfB Lübeck , which meant that Braunschweig defended third place and qualified for the new Bundesliga for the 1963/64 season . In two league rounds (1961–1963) Gerwien had played 54 league games for Eintracht and scored 13 goals.
In total, he completed 298 point games (44 goals) for Eintracht from 1961 to 1973. He was known less as an enforcer than as a preparer of important goals. One of his most important actions was a solo with which he played the defense of Hannover 96 in February 1963 when the score was 0-0 in the 83rd minute of the Lower Saxony derby and the ball finally passed to Manfred Wuttich , who made it 1-0 -Endstand transformed. This game was decisive for Eintracht to become a founding member of the Bundesliga; Hannover 96 had been tied as a competitor for the third Bundesliga place in the north until then.
Gerwien also played ten times for Eintracht Braunschweig in the European Cup , scoring one goal, and six times in the German national soccer team , first against Algeria in 1963, against Morocco in 1964, four appearances in 1968; his only international goal was on December 14, 1968 in a 2-2 draw against Brazil in Rio de Janeiro . He also played the international game of the U-23 national team , which was lost on November 27, 1963 in Liverpool against England's selection .
With Eintracht Braunschweig, Gerwien became a regular German champion in 1966/67 . His coach at the time, Helmuth Johannsen, described him as a very temperamental character, both in competition and in play, as well as outside of sport.
In 1971 Gerwien was sentenced to a fine of 4,400 DM for his involvement in the Bundesliga scandal . After his time as a Bundesliga professional, he let his career end in the amateur camp at VfB Peine (1974-1977), Teutonia Uelzen (1977/78) and TSV Wendezelle (1978).
Private
Klaus Gerwien was married and had two daughters and three grandchildren. He last lived in Hordorf , where a daughter also lives, or in a nursing home in Sickte . After his football career, the trained industrial electrician and later insurance salesman ran a quick cleaning service with his wife in downtown Braunschweig. Gerwien died in September 2018, a few days before his 78th birthday.
