location

Giershofen is located in the Niederwesterwald predominantly on the left bank of the Holzbach creek south and above the city center of Dierdorf. To the east of Giershofen and a little further up is the Brückrachdorf district on the right side of the stream. The Ölsbach flows through Giershofen from the left to the Holzbach, which emerges a little southwest of the outskirts from its upper reaches Ochsenbruchbach and Neuwiesengraben at the last of the Roth ponds, the larger of which are crossed by the right Neuwiesengraben on the main line.

history

The first settlement in this area took place as early as the Middle Bronze Age (1550–1200 BC). This is confirmed by discovered during the construction of the highway (1937-1939) tumuli between greed Hofen and Großmaischeid .

In a document from Archbishop Philip I of Cologne from 1173, the place was called "Gyselbrechtencoven". In a document from 1344, according to which Count Wilhelm I von Wied and Isenburg (1324-1383) sold his possessions in the Dierdorfer Land to the Trier Archbishop and Elector Baldwin of Luxembourg , the place is called "Gieselbrechtinchofen". "Giselbrechting" means "son of Gieselbrecht", so a son of a Gieselbrecht had his court here.

Later names are "Gyselbrechtischoven", "Gisebrechtshofen", "Greshouen" and 1647 "Kirschhofen" until "Schowen", which is still used today in the local dialect, was popularly used.

The "Rother Hof", which belongs to Giershofen today, was mentioned in a document in 1226 as "Rode" and belonged to the Rommersdorf Abbey .

A great conflagration in 1730 destroyed almost the whole village, in 1897 a part of the village was again destroyed by fire.

Incorporation

As part of the regional reform in Rhineland-Palatinate, which took effect on June 7, 1969 , the previously independent local community of Giershofen was incorporated into the city of Dierdorf and has been a district of Dierdorf ever since.
