Giorgi Latso (born April 15, 1978 in Tbilisi , Georgian SSR as Giorgi Lazabidze ; Georgian გიორგი ლაცაბიძე ) is a Georgian - American pianist and composer .

Life

He started playing the piano at the age of three. Latso began composing his first pieces at the age of five. At the age of ten he played Beethoven and Grieg's piano concertos. He studied at the state Sarajishvili Conservatory in Tbilisi , at the Hanover University of Music , at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and at the Flora L. Thornton School of Music, University of Southern California in Los Angeles . His teachers included Russudan Chodzava, Gerrit Zitterbart , Lasar Berman and Stewart Gordon.

Latso has made numerous appearances in master classes and concerts in Europe, Asia, South America and the United States of America. He was hailed in the Austrian press for his performance of Beethoven's 5th Piano Concerto in the WUK Kulturhaus as "... a technically brilliant pianist filled with poignant poetry and true profundity ". The England Rhinegold Classical Magazine described his recording of the Debussy Preludes as "... performed with an extraordinary imagination and seldom heard musical timbre ..."

Another of his early performances in Salzburg was part of a DVD documentary about Latso that was produced by K-TV Austria.

Latso has received numerous awards throughout his career. Among other things, he was a prizewinner of the “International Yehudi Menuhin Foundation” in the international competition for young pianists in Los Angeles and the German Marion Hedda Ilse Gräfin Dönhoff Foundation. Latso was awarded the DAAD scholarship, the Vladimir Spivakov scholarship, and a scholarship from Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze .

In May 2010 he received his doctorate at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and earned a degree of Doctor of Musical Arts .

Latso made his concert debut at Wigmore Hall in London. His composition “Cyber ​​Moment” for violin and piano was premiered. In 2012 he performed in the Berlin Philharmonic .

Latso has recorded a CD with all of the piano-violin works by the Polish-German composer Ignatz Waghalter together with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra , Irmina Trynkos and Alexander Walker. In the December issue of the Luxembourg magazine Pizzicato (2012) she received the Supersonic Award from the International Classical Music Awards (ICMA) .

In 2012, Latso received an invitation from the Vatican and Benedict XVI. for a performance of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major, KV 467, with the Vienna Philharmonic in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore .

In January 2013, Giorgi Latso was named a Steinway Artist in New York City .

Latso gives masterclasses in Europe, USA, Russia, and Asia, including at the Tchaikovsky Moscow Conservatory , Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Mozarteum University Salzburg, Vienna Conservatory for Music, Conservatory Superior de Música del Liceu, University of Southern California , San Francisco Conservatory for music, Oberlin College , Tokyo University of Arts and many more. Many of his students are winners of international piano competitions.

He has been living in the USA again since 2020 .

Educational activity

Giorgi Latso taught at the University of Southern California from 2007 to 2010, then became professor of piano at the private Azusa Pacific University and has taught at the Community College of Glendale (California) since 2011 . From 2012 to 2019 he worked as a professor (piano) at the Prayner Conservatory and Music and Dramatic Art in Vienna.

From 2007 to 2010 he was President of the Music Teachers National Association in California. As a piano teacher, Lazabidze has given master classes in Europe, Asia and the USA and is a jury member at various national and international competitions. Many of his concert recordings were broadcast by American and European radio stations.

Compositional work

Among other things, Latso composed the film music for Twilight's Grace in 2006 and the film music Waltz Fantasy from 2002, which was honored as the best film music at the international film festival in Bologna .

repertoire

Latso focuses primarily on the music of the Viennese Classical , Romantic and Late Romanticism. He performs all of the piano works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Frédéric Chopin , Franz Liszt , and Claude Debussy . In recent years, Lazabidze has made a name for himself primarily as a Chopin interpreter who is familiar with historically informed performance practice, which he presented in cyclical performances in several European cities. Lazabidse is one of the youngest pianists to have performed and recorded all 24 of the Chopin Etudes and 24 of the Preludes as well as all 12 of the Transcendental Etudes by Franz Liszt live.
