John Abraham Godson (born November 25, 1970 in Nigeria as Godson Chikama Onyekwere ) is a Polish politician .

Life

Godson comes from southern Nigeria and belongs to the Igbo people .

As a young man in the 1980s, Godson met a Romanian missionary who told him about Eastern Europe . In 1993 he went to Poland for the first time , where he fell in love with the country and with his current wife , who comes from Szczecin . “I came for two and it's been 17 years now. I travel a lot, but nowhere do I feel better than in Poland. ”In 1993 he was beaten twice on the street because of the color of his skin. In retrospect, Godson said that racism in Poland was related to the fact that homogeneous Poland was not yet used to foreigners, but the attitude of Poles had already improved with the new freedom of travel.

Before he emigrated, Godson studied agricultural science at Abia State University in Uturu . He then attended human resource management courses at Trinity College in Newburgh , Indiana, in the United States . In Poland, he completed a degree in political science at the University of International Studies in Łódź . He is currently working on his PhD at the Faculty of Management at the University of Łódź and at the Faculty of Journalism and Political Science at the University of Warsaw .

Godson taught as a lecturer from 1993 to 1997 at the West Pomeranian Technical University in Stettin and from 1997 to 1998 at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan . Then he founded a language school in Choszczno and worked as a pastor in the local evangelical church. In 2000 he was granted Polish citizenship.

In 2003 he moved to Łódź and started to get involved in politics. He became a councilor for the liberal Platforma Obywatelska in the Janów-Olechów district, where he lives with his wife and four children. In 2007 he was promoted to the city council, where he usually appeared in a suit and tie, but also wore brightly colored Nigerian shirts in the summer months. In 2008 he founded the African Institute in Poland , which aims to bring Poles closer to the different cultures of the continent and to help foreign students from Africa to find their way around Poland. He organized conferences on racial tolerance in Poland as well as training courses on Africa. Godson also advises entrepreneurs on investing in Africa and binational couples on cultural issues.

Godson is one of a large group of Nigerian people who are in public life in Poland. These include the soccer player Emmanuel Olisadebe , the boxer Izuagbe Ugonoh , the TV presenter Olimpia Ajakaiye , the actress Aleksandra Szwed and the partisan and musician August Agbola O'Browne .

Godson took over his mandate in the Polish parliament, the Sejm , from Hanna Zdanowska after her election as the first female mayor of Łódź in December 2010. As a member of parliament, he changed parliamentary groups several times and has been a member of the moderately conservative Polish People's Party since 2015 .
