Gorodwikowsk ( Russian Городовиковск , until 1971 Baschanta  / Башанта ; Kalmyk Башнта , Baschnta ) is a small town and Rajon center with 9565 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) in the Autonomous Republic of Kalmykia of the Russian Federation .

location

Gorodowikowsk is located in the Manytn lowlands in the far west of Kalmykia, not far from the borders with Rostov Oblast and the Stavropol Region . The distance to the eastern republic capital Elista is about 240 km, the closest city is Salsk in Rostov Oblast, about 60 km northwest of Gorodowikowsk.

history

The village was founded by the Kalmucks in 1872 under the name Baschanta ( Mongolian for "house"). In 1909 the village became the center of a Kalmyk Ulus (≈ district), in 1938, now part of the Kalmyk ASSR , an urban-type settlement . The name was changed to Gorodowikowsk in honor of the hero of the Soviet Union , Oka Iwanowitsch Gorodowikow (1879-1960), and the city rights were granted at the same time in 1971.

economy

Gorodovikovsk is relatively poor in industry; there this is largely limited to food companies. In Gordovikovsk Rajon, agriculture is the main activity.
