Lagan ( Kalmyk / Russian Лагань ) is a city in the southern Russian Republic of Kalmykia with 14,323 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located in the northwest part of the Caspian Depression , about 300 km southeast of the republic capital Elista , 9 kilometers from the coast of the Caspian Sea , with which it is connected by a sea channel ( Laganski bank ).
Lagan is the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name .
The nearest railway station is in Ulan-Chol on the Astrakhan - Kisljar - Kisiljurt route a good 40 kilometers to the west.
history
Lagan was founded in 1870 as a village of peasants resettled from central Russia on the island of the same name (which was then silted up in the meantime) (from Mongolian or Kalmyk lay for muddy ).
In 1936 the place received the status of an urban-type settlement . After the dissolution of the Autonomous Republic and the deportation of the Kalmyk population under Stalin , the name was changed to Kaspijski (Russian Каспийский for Caspian (e settlement) ) in 1944 and, in 1963, the city was granted city rights under this name.
In 1991 the city got its old name again.

Culture and sights
There are various modern Buddhist statues and structures in the city , such as the Red Gate and the Temple ( Churul ). The city has had a local museum since 1977.
economy
In Lagan there is a machine factory and fishing companies (port, naval base, fish processing). Oil and gas are produced in the Rajon .
