Zagan Aman ( Russian Цага́н Ама́н ; Kalmyk Цаһан Амн ) is a settlement (possjolok) in the Republic of Kalmykia in Russia with 6027 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The place is about 230 km as the crow flies northeast of the republic capital Elista on the right bank of the right arm of the Volga Verkhnekopanowskaya Voloschka, which is separated from the wider left main arm of the river by the Verkhnekopanowski Island. Zagan Aman is located in the 10 km wide strip that forms the only access of the Republic of Kalmykia to the Volga and also a small area on its left bank opposite the place.

Zagan Aman is the administrative center of Justinski Rajons as well as the seat of the rural community Zaganamanskoje selskoje posselenije, to which the settlement (possjolok) Zagan Bulg, located a good 3 km east on the opposite, left bank of the Volga, belongs. About four fifths of the population are Kalmyks , the rest are predominantly ethnic Russians .

history

The place was first mentioned in 1818; The year of foundation is stated in the document as 1798, when a first Buddhist monastery (Churul) was built on the left bank of the Volga in the area of what is now the municipality of Zagan Bulg . It was later moved to its current location on the right bank of the Volga. From the middle of the 19th century at the latest, it was run as the administrative seat and main camp for Ulus Bagazochurowski of the nomadic Kalmyks. The settlement was located on the territory of the specially administered so-called Kalmyzkaja steppe of the Astrakhan governorate . The place name literally stands for “White Shore” in Kalmyk, also interpreted as “Happy Shore”.

After the establishment of the Kalmyk Autonomous Oblast in 1920, Zagan Aman came to the newly formed Privolschki ulus with its seat in Kalmyzki Bazaar (from 1927 Kanukowsk, from 1944 Privolschski, since 1965 incorporated into Astrakhan as one of the northwestern districts on the right bank of the Volga ). As early as February 14, 1923, the Priwolschski ulus was dissolved again and the previous structure restored, but in 1930 in other borders, again with Zagan Aman, re-expelled. After the dissolution of the Kalmuck ASSR and the deportation of the entire Kalmuck population at the end of 1943, the area was attached to the newly formed Astrakhan Oblast , and the place itself was renamed Burunny in 1952 .

After the restoration of Kalmyk autonomy on January 12, 1957 (again as Kalmuck ASSR from 1958), the place was assigned to the Justinski rajon, which had existed since 1938, and its administrative seat was relocated to Burunny on March 22, 1957 (the eponymous settlement Justa is a good 60 km southwest ). On March 22, 1961, the historical place name was restored. From 1965 to 1992 the place had the status of an urban-type settlement , under the Russian spelling Zagan-Aman (with a hyphen).
