Ulan-Chol ( Russian Улан-Хол ; Kalmyk Улан Хол - in German roughly "red valley") is a village founded in 1923 with about 2212 inhabitants in Laganski rajon , Kalmykia , Russia .

The village is located in the Caspian Depression , the town center is 21 meters below sea level. The climate is typically continental .
history
The village was founded in 1923 and initially consisted of six houses, several barracks and two tents. In 1924 the new settlement became the administrative seat of the newly established Erketenowski Ulus . In the following year the settlement got a hospital and a pharmacy . At first fewer than 50 people lived in the village, more than half of whom worked in public administration. In 1930 the Ulus was dissolved and Ulan-Chol was incorporated into the Ulus of Lagan . On January 24, 1938 Ulan-Chol was again the administrative seat of an Ulus, which was now named after the place itself.
On August 16, 1941, the Central Committee of the CPSU and the Council of People's Commissars decided to build a 348 km long railway line between Kizlyar and Astrakhan , which would pass west of Ulan-Chols at kilometer 166 from Astrakhan. Several hundred people - mostly women, the elderly and young people - were forced to do labor from the Ulus of Ulan-Chol. On December 28, 1943, the village , which was mostly inhabited by Kalmyks, was abandoned and all Kalmyks were deported to the Altai region or Novosibirsk Oblast as “traitors” .
After the rehabilitation of the Kalmyks in 1956, former residents returned to Ulan-Chol and rebuilt the village near the train station. In 1966 the town received urban-type settlement status , which was revoked in 1992.

Ulan-Chol is located on the former R263 between Georgievsk and Lagan.
The Ulan-Chol station lies on the railway line Kizlyar-Astrakhan . Long-distance trains to Moscow, Baku , Makhachkala , Grozny , Volgograd , Tyumen and Kharkov stop here .

Education and culture
In Ulan-Chol there is a library, a secondary school, a kindergarten and a village cultural center.
