The Green Ditch in the Ore Mountains is an artificial ditch eight kilometers in length that was created in the 17th century on the mountain slope above the Schwarzen Pockau , which used to direct impact water to the pits near Pobershau .

course

The ditch begins at the eastern end of Kühnhaide , directly on the German-Czech border at an altitude of about 710 m above sea level. NN . It then leads northwards on the west side of the Schwarzwassertal . About 700 m west of the Katzenstein , the ditch crosses the watershed between Schwarzer and Roter Pockau . From there, the water continues to flow in a south-easterly direction and finally flows into the Goldkronenbach . This in turn flows into the Rote Pockau.

Prehistory and construction

The Green Trench

For mining , water was extremely important as an energy source. With it, artificial tools for conveyor systems and the drainage of the pits could be operated. While the Marterberg nearby mines by the running there Wagenbach and Reitz Hainer stuff ditch were well catered for, the conditions for lying on the watershed of the wild mountain mines were extremely unfavorable.

To improve the water conditions, consideration was given to bringing part of the water of the Schwarzen Pockau into the neighboring valley via a ditch. Measurements, which were very complex for the time, proved that this is possible. The project comes from mountain master Martin Hiller. Construction finally began in 1678 and was completed in 1680. The effective construction time was only 57 weeks as the work was suspended during the winter. According to the survey, the total length of the trench was 4132 Lachter , the construction costs amounted to 1211 guilders.

particularities

The trench had to be carved through rock over a length of around 700 meters and led into channels for around 240 meters in order to compensate for the difficult terrain .

Cessation of mining and present

After mining ceased around 1865, the ditch formed an important basis for traders and production facilities along the course of the Roten Pockau in Pobershau.

The trench was repaired between 1974 and 1981. The former Grabensteig, now a hiking trail, runs along the trench.
