The Grünsee ( Italian: Lago Verde ) is a small reservoir in the rearmost part of the Ulten Valley in South Tyrol . It lies at an altitude of 2529  m and covers an area of 24  hectares . It is framed by mountains of the Ortler Alps , including the Weißbrunnspitze ( 3253  m ), the Hinteren Eggenspitze ( 3443  m ), the Vorderen Eggenspitze ( 3385  m ) and the Zufrittspitze ( 3439  m ). The inflow to the lake comes from the Weißbrunnferner glacier area. The body of water is located in the Stilfserjoch National Park .

The trapezoidal cross-section dam is 423 meters long and 53 meters high. It is poured out of rock and sealed on the water side with sheet metal that is flushed with air bubbles in winter to prevent freezing near the dam. As there is no road leading to the lake area, all construction machines had to be dismantled and reassembled at the top when the dam was built for transport by construction cableway. The lake holds 6.7 million cubic meters of water.

The Grünsee is the highest reservoir in the cascade of reservoirs in Ultental. Its water is supplied via a pressure tunnel and a pressure pipe to 641 meters deep at the top side of the Weissenbrunn lake situated hydroelectric plant Weissenbrunn passed. This height of fall means that the hydropower is used effectively. The installed capacity of the power plant is 10 MW.

In pumped storage mode , however, water can also be pumped from the deeper fishing lake into the Grünsee , usually at night . The entire system was put into operation in 1963. An operational cable car of the power plant, which is used by the operating personnel permanently on site, connects the Grünsee with the Weißbrunnsee.

The Grünsee can be reached from Weißbrunnsee in around two hours of walking. The Höchst Hut ( Rifugio Umberto Canziani , also Grünseehütte ) is in the immediate vicinity of the lake . The hut, built for the first time in 1909, had to be relocated when the lake was dammed.
