Graeme Randall

Graeme Randall (born March 14, 1975 in Edinburgh ) is a former British judoka . He was World Champion in Birmingham in 1999 and winner of the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester.

Athletic career

The 1.80 m tall Graeme Randall fought in the light middleweight division, the weight class up to 81 kilograms, until 1997 the limit was 78 kilograms.

In 1994 he won a bronze medal at the Junior World Championships, two weeks later he was Junior European Champion. The following year he won silver again at the Junior European Championships, in the final he lost to the Estonian Aleksei Budõlin . At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta he was eliminated after 1:47 minutes against the Israeli Oren Smadja .

At the 1997 World Championships in Paris he was defeated in the quarter-finals by the North Korean Kwak Ok-chol , with victories in the hope round over the Spaniard Sergio Doménech and the Brazilian Flávio Canto , Randall reached the battle for bronze, which he lost to Patrick Reiter from Austria. In the following year at the European Championships in Oviedo in 1998 he was defeated in the quarterfinals by the Hungarian Bertalan Hajtós , after two wins in the hope round he lost in the battle for bronze against the Turk Irakli Uznadze .

In 1999 he won the quarter-finals of the European Championships in Bratislava against Sergio Doménech and lost in the semi-finals to the Portuguese Nuno Delgado . With a victory over the Lithuanian Robertas Rimas Randall won a bronze medal. The 1999 World Championships took place in Birmingham. Randall defeated Matti Landu from Finland , Sergei Aschwanden from Switzerland and Patrick Reiter. In the quarterfinals he beat the Kazakhs Ruslan Seilchanow and in the semifinals European champion Nuno Delgado. With a final victory over the Uzbek Farkhod Turaev , Randall was world champion.

The following year, Randall retired at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney in his second fight against Iranian Kazem Sarikhani after 3:42 minutes, after he had previously defeated the Tunisian Abdessalem Arous in 28 seconds. At the 2001 World Championships in Munich, Randall lost in the semifinals against the South Korean Cho In-chul and finished in fifth place after losing to Elkhan Rajabli from Azerbaijan in the battle for bronze . His last major tournament was the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. He won the final for Scotland against the Englishman Thomas Cousins .
