County of Montfort-l'Amaury
The rule and later county of Montfort (-l'Amaury) around the main town of Montfort-l'Amaury existed at least since the beginning of the 11th century . It was in what is now the Yvelines department in the Île-de-France region .
The county in the Middle Ages
The Lords and Counts of Montfort appeared several times in the Middle Ages . The best known among them are Simon IV. De Montfort († 1218), the leader of the Albigensian Crusade , and his son Simon V. de Montfort († 1265), who was initially victorious against the English King Henry III. and brought it to the regent of the land.
After the county had inherited the Dukes of Brittany from the Cape Dreux sidelines, the Counts of Montfort emerged again in the War of Breton Succession (1341-1364): in the dispute over the successor to Duke John III. between the Count of Penthièvre and the Count of Montfort, brothers of the late Duke or their descendants, the younger Montforts remained victorious and from 1341 - with an interruption from 1345 to 1364 - constituted the last ducal dynasty, before Brittany with Anne de Bretagne and her daughter Claude de France was integrated into the Kingdom of France.
The county after the annexation of Brittany to France
After Brittany was annexed to France, the county became part of the crown domain, and so the King of France was also Count of Montfort l'Amaury.
With royal deed dated November 1667, registered on 16 March 1668, permitted Louis XIV. The Charles Honoré, Marquis d'Albert, duc de Chevreuse and his descendants, the titles and names to lead a "comte de Montfort l'Amaury".
In order to enlarge the domain of Versailles, Louis XIV made an exchange in February 1692 with the same Charles Honoré d'Albert, duc de Luynes and duc de Chevreuse as well as Peer of France, by giving him the county of Montfort l'Amaury with the associated one Dominion over a large part of the lands of the Duchy of Chevreuse transferred.
Since then, the House of Albert , which still exists today, has held the title of Comte de Montfort l'Amaury in addition to its other titles.
