Grand Marais is a small town (with the status " City ") and the administrative seat of Cook County in the far northeast of the US -amerikanischen state of Minnesota . In 2010 Grand Marais had 1,351 inhabitants.

Grand Marais is located on the north shore of Lake Superior , the westernmost and highest of the Great Lakes . The place is not far from the border with Canada and on the lake across from Wisconsin and Michigan . Grand Marais is 47 ° 45'02 "north latitude, 90 ° 20'03" west longitude and extends over 7.51 km².

Neighboring towns to Grand Marais are Lutsen (28.6 km southwest along the lakeshore) and Hovland (29.7 km northeast along the lakeshore).

The closest major cities are Thunder Bay in the Canadian province of Ontario (128 km northeast) and Duluth (177 km southwest). Minneapolis , the largest city in Minnesota, is 425 km southwest.

The mouth of the Pigeon River , which forms the border with Canada, is 65 km northeast.

The main street of Grand Marais is formed by Minnesota State Route 61, which runs along the north shore of Lake Superior . The historic Gunflint Trail , now County Road 12, heads north from Grand Marais. All other roads are subordinate partly unpaved roads as well as inner-city connecting routes.

In Grand Marais there is a small port that connects the city to all the cities on the Great Lakes.

The nearest airports are Thunder Bay International Airport, 124 km northeast, and Duluth International Airport , 183 km southwest ; the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport is located 432 km south-west.
