history

Historic home on Emerson Avenue

The settlement Grant Park was created from November 13, 1870 by Clinton C. Campbell after the clearance of a train station on the Illinois Central Railroad , when he set up a depot there. The place was named after the then President Ulysses S. Grant and initially did not have the suffix "Park", this was added later to avoid confusion with another nearby train station.

Shortly after the construction of the settlement, several families came to Grant Park, in 1872 there were already around 150 residents in the village. By 1883 the population rose to 300, on April 16, 1883 an application for incorporation was filed with the Kankakee County Court . The application was approved and effective May 8, 1883. After the city was officially founded, the sidewalks and streets were repaved and a small prison was built.

On June 10, 1884, Grant Park was destroyed by fire and had to be rebuilt afterwards. On April 21, 1912, a tornado hit the city, 17 buildings were completely destroyed and 50 others damaged, 21 huts and farm buildings were destroyed and 25 people were injured. On April 7, 1948, Grant Park was hit by an even more severe tornado, in which almost all buildings in Grant Park were massively damaged, three people died and eight others were injured. Exactly six years later to the day, a resident of Grant Park was again killed in a tornado, here too the storm caused damage of several million US dollars.
