The Gratzenbach is a tributary of the Rettenbach in the middle Koralpe in western Styria in Austria .

location

The sources of the stream are located in a rock fall area on the southern slope of the Schwarzkogel . It is a torrent with a steep gradient. The deeply cut valley of the Gratzenbach was also known as the Schwarzkogelgraben .

The Gratzenbach is located in the area of Rettenbach in the municipality of Deutschlandsberg .

The name of the stream is derived from the “Gratzen” farm , from the bottom of which it rises. It is the only stream in the village of Rettenbach that can be assigned to a farm and for which a specific name is used.

Burr mill

Only a millstone and the mill passage (right) remain of the mill at Gratzenbach

The water flow of the brook was sufficient to drive a small mill with an overshot mill wheel .

This mill was at the beginning of the road gradient in front of the farm . Burrs. It was in operation until around 1960.

A “swell” was available on the slope behind the mill: This is water that is dammed behind a small earth dam to generate a surge of water that can set the mill wheel in motion. The mill was put into operation by the residents of the farm as required; there was no own miller.

The mill is linked to a legend:

A farmer working in the mill at night is said to have been startled by the irregular running of the mill wheel in spite of an even supply of water. Corresponding controls showed no abnormalities. Later the door to the rest room of the mill is said to have opened and a black figure tumbled under the bed of the resting man. He fled in the direction of the courtyard, and the figure is said to have stayed on his heels.

After this incident, a picture tree with a prayer chair was erected in a group of birches approx. 20 m west of the mill. This memorial existed until around 1960.

Flora and fauna

The Gratzenbach is almost entirely in the forest area (mainly spruce , more rarely maples , ash and birch ). Individual green areas in the catchment area are used for grassland farming and as pastures.

Dragonflies and caddis flies live near the water . Their larvae are a reliable indicator of water quality; they only occur in bodies of water with good to very good water quality.

geology

The course of the Gratzenbach lies in slab gneiss (Koralm crystalline). At the lower reaches, the deeply cut brook cuts through a small area in which the rock that lies under the slab of gneiss becomes visible (geological window) . This rock is shown on the geological map as an amphibolite . It was also known as mica quartzite. This point has helped to explain the geological situation of the rock layers on the upper reaches of the Laßnitz. An investigation into the bed load conditions of the Laßnitz also deals with the influence of the Gratzenbach (Schwarzkogelgraben) on bed load in the course of the Laßnitz.

Water quality and usage

The water quality is quality class I (unpolluted, practically drinking water quality).

Upper course of the Gratzenbach, formerly drinking water supply

The water hardness is low (range 1–2 - soft water).

The water of the stream was diverted several times to supply neighboring farms and properties:

  • A water pipe from the upper course supplied the farm vlg. Zachthoma.
  • Another drain in the upper reaches was the drinking water supply of the Gratzen farm until around 1965. Until then, it was an openly flowing watercourse for parts of the way and was only then replaced by a spring catchment.
  • A third discharge, which branched off to the right below the Hebalmstraße bridge, fed the cattle trough in the pastures in the southern part of the Gratzen farm.

The routes of the old discharges are still recognizable as narrow steps in the terrain.
