Gregory Brian Davis (born October 29, 1965 in Rome , Georgia ) is a retired American football player who played as a placekicker in the National Football League (NFL) from 1987 to 1998 .
life and career
Davis attended Lakeside High School in Atlanta , Georgia.
From 1983 to 1985 he was a placekicker and punter for the military college football team " The Citadel Bulldogs " for three consecutive seasons in which Davis led the team from Charleston , South Carolina . From this time he holds records with a total of 181 career points: most field goals (35), most field goals as a kicker (65), the furthest field goal with 53 yd (48.5 m ), the furthest punt with 81 yd ( 74.1 m ), the highest punting average in a game (51.3), the highest punting average in a season (44.6) and the highest punting average for a player (42.1). In 1995 he was inducted into the Citadel Athletic Hall of Fame.
After his college football days, Davis was selected in the ninth round of the 1987 NFL Draft as a total of 246th player by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and went to training camp with them , but eventually signed with the Atlanta Falcons .
In 1989 Davis signed with the New England Patriots as a free agent for a season, but then returned to the Falcons in 1990 for a second assignment; that year he scored 106 points. In 1991 he moved to the Cardinals , where he twice reached the longest field goal of his career with 55 yd (50.3 m ) each and scored the six longest field goals in the Cardinals team history; at the end of the 1996 season he was eliminated from the Cardinals. 1997 was signed by the Minnesota Vikings , but released only five weeks later. In the same year he continued his career with the San Diego Chargers and led the team in the standings. Davis spent his last NFL season in 1998 with the Oakland Raiders , scoring 82 points; he was replaced by Michael Husted after retiring.
His active career in the NFL spanned a total of twelve seasons. In 169 games he scored 224 of 325 field goals (69 percent) and 290 of 296 extra points (98 percent), which corresponds to a total of 962 points. He averaged 35.8 yd (32.7 m ) ten times . He is co-owner of the previous NFL record of three 50-yard field goals (45.7 m) in one game and the fourth-best goalscorer in the history of the Cardinals with 474 points.
Today Davis works as a trainer. He and his wife Shauna have two daughters, Savannah and Charlotte; the family lives in Sandy Springs .
