The Grigorowitsch M-5 ( Russian Григорович М-5 , also Schtschetinin Schtsch-5 (Щетинин Щ-5), after the manufacturing operation in St. Petersburg , Schetinin) is a single-engined biplane - flying boat Russian origin.

draft

The M-5 is based on the Grigorowitsch M-4 . Compared to the original model, the lower wing was lengthened and attached directly to the fuselage. The profile thickness was only 4%. Support floats were attached to the end of the lower wing. The boat step has been reduced to 70 mm in the middle and 140 mm at the edge. Behind the wing, the fuselage tapered sharply to form a tail girder. The two-seater aircraft was made in a mixed construction (wooden frame / fabric). It was first propelled by a Gnôme Monosoupape engine of 100 hp, which drove a thrust propeller. The carburetor was supplied by a pressure line. The fuel tank in the rear fuselage had to be manually pressurized using a hand pump.

history

M-5 from the Baku Seaplane Officer School around 1917/18

The flight tests began in the spring of 1915. It turned out that the M-5 coped well with waves up to 0.5 meters and was very easy to fly. Series production began on April 12, 1915 and, with many changes to the details of the machine, lasted until 1923. The efficiency of the M-5 and the start of series production made it possible to do without foreign flying boats of this performance class as far as possible. The pilots were seated next to each other. The co-pilot or observer could mount a 7.62mm Vickers machine gun in a swivel mount if necessary, although the scout machine normally flew unarmed.

With the appearance of the Grigorowitsch M-9 , the M-5 migrated to training because the maximum speed in particular was no longer sufficient. The flight schools complained about the frequent, necessary repairs to the wooden floor. An improved version, especially reinforced in the bottom area, was not delivered for economic reasons.

Attempts to increase the maximum speed by increasing the performance did not lead to any useful result. Grigorowitsch built five test models each with more powerful Rhone engines of 110 hp and 120 hp and a single one with a 130 hp Clerget engine. To compensate for the greater engine torque, the angle of attack had to be increased slightly, so that the increase in performance did not affect the top speed. However, the 130-hp Clerget was used in larger numbers for the armed reconnaissance aircraft. In addition to the types mentioned, other rotary motors were used, which were often adapted in front workshops.

A total of about 300 copies have been produced by this machine, which both in the First World War , as in the well October Revolution subsequent civil war were used. In 1918, numerous machines took part in the defense of Baku . Some machines were used until 1925.

Variants of the M-5

Grigorovich M-6

Test sample with a water-cooled 150 HP V8 Sunbeam Crusader engine. The tests had to be stopped because of the poor take-off behavior, as the bow dipped heavily into the water at full throttle.

Grigorovich M-7

Also with the 150 HP Sunbeam with a modified hull shape and boat line. No problems in flight, but behavior on the water had deteriorated.

Grigorovich M-8

Motorization like M-6 and M-7, again modified hull shape with a 140 mm high boat step. However, this could no longer start.

Grigorovich realized that he had to start a new design for a more powerful flying boat. The Grigorowitsch M-9 was ultimately created on the basis of the tests .
