Werner Grissmann (born January 21, 1952 in Lienz , East Tyrol ) is a former Austrian ski racer . He mainly competed downhill .

Ski career

In an ÖSV downhill team with countless stars such as Franz Klammer , Josef Walcher , David Zwilling , Reinhard Tritscher , Peter Wirnsberger , Harti Weirather , Klaus Eberhard , Helmut Höflehner , Anton Steiner , Uli Spieß , Leonhard Stock , Bartl Gensbichler , Karl Cordin and Erwin Resch Werner Grissmann was the "bird of paradise". He is considered to be one of the “most colorful birds” that the Ski World Cup has produced in its long history to date. Although Grissmann was often ahead at intermediate times, he only achieved one World Cup victory in the downhill on February 11, 1973 in St. Moritz . With start number 37 (like many other runners who started later) he benefited from the clearly faster route (until then the Italian Marcello Varallo (no. 6) had led, who fell back to 15th place.

At the 1974 World Championships in St. Moritz, Grissmann started with the number 1, but fell. He was determined for the four-man team for the 1976 Olympic Downhill on the Patscherkofel, a fall in the last training session on February 4th, i.e. one day before the competition, in which he suffered a sprained collateral ligament in his right knee (reported per Helicopter transported to the University Hospital Innsbruck), even meant the end of the season for him ( Josef Walcher was nominated instead ). After all, he still won precious metal when he took bronze in the downhill at the World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 1978 . With 10 top three places and 46 top ten places in World Cup descents from 1973 to 1981, he is one of the best downhill specialists in World Cup history. On February 23, 1974 , he was Austrian downhill champion in Warth . In 1980, at the Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid , he finished seventh in the downhill, before ending his career in 1982 after poor performance.

During the downhill race on January 23, 1970 in Mégève (winner Karl Schranz) Grissmann suffered a serious pelvic injury. He should have been taken away by helicopter, but had to be unloaded again because Michel Bozon fell even more severely (and later died in the hospital).

Motorsport

After his career as a ski racer, Grissmann also went into rallying . His best result was a 5th place at the San Remo Rally. Walter Röhrl and his co-driver Christian Geistdörfer stood by Grissmann strongly on his rally debut. Grissmann also had the roadmap from them , which contained the driving instructions for a rally route. Werner Grissmann drove an Audi Quattro . He ended his rally career after the birth of his son Niki.

An entry in the Guinness Book of Records gave him a 24-hour world speed record for series vehicles, which he set up in 1990 together with Franz Doppler and Horst Felbermayr senior . In a Porsche 928 S , he and his colleagues drove 6,175 kilometers in 24 hours; including refueling stops, this meant an average speed of 267.5 km / h.

Other successes

  • Victory of the Schladming European Cup run on December 18, 1971

Sports management

In 1987 Werner Grissmann established the Red Bull Dolomitenmann , an extreme sports competition in the Lienz Dolomites that is still successful today . 2005 in Cape Town of - the first 'brother' of the Dolomitenmann Red Bull Cape Town Man held.

Private and professional life

Werner Grissmann is married to Sandra and has two children. He worked as a master chimney sweep in East Tyrol. His father Karl Grissmann (1917–1982) was also a master chimney sweep and an excellent alpine skier within Austria.

His daughter Nina has been married to the snowboarder Benjamin Karl since 2011 .

Nicknames

"Grizzly" is one of the nicknames of Werner Grissmann, who already had a considerable body size during his skiing career. Grissmann is also called the "interim world champion" because he was the fastest in countless World Cup races in the interim, but could not bring these times to the finish.

Hussar ride over ski slope

In 2006 Werner Grissmann drove his off-road vehicle from the mountain station to the valley towards the end of a day's hiking tour in Bad Kleinkirchheim . In doing so, however, he started sliding on the wet grass and to prevent a rollover he steered the car in a direct lane over the steep target slope. He drove over a goods lane without braking and then jumped about seven meters over an access road that ran across the direction of travel.Three tires burst in the process, so he drove on the rims for about 100 meters to the valley station and left the car. When the police arrived, he could no longer be found. However, Grissmann could be reached by phone and he immediately went to the Bad Kleinkirchheim police station. He told police he wanted to show off his SUV, but he slipped on the steep terrain.

A woman was injured in this action. After paying pain and suffering compensation and a fine of 3,000 euros, the proceedings against Grissmann were discontinued by the public prosecutor in October 2007.

Screaming duel

In order to get the former ÖSV cross-country skiing boss Walter Mayer and the world-class cross-country skiers Christian Hoffmann and Wladimir Smirnow to start at the Dolomitenmann , Grissmann had "beautified" the route conditions in the mountain run.

Mayer, who was completely challenged by the route, then fought a legendary duel with the "Dolomitenmann organizer" Werner Grissmann circling in the helicopter above him while running uphill.

Radio and television

Werner Grissmann was also the operator of the radio station "Radio Grizzly" in East Tyrol . In 2007 the ORF hired him as a presenter for an edition of the culinary series Aufgegabelt in Austria . Grissmann, known as a connoisseur and gourmet, presented typical regional East Tyrolean dishes to the Austrian television audience. On April 23, 2009 he had an " audience " in the television series " Wir sind Kaiser " .
