geography

location

The Große Aschkoppe is located in the Kellerwald-Edersee nature park . The summit of the wooded mountain rises about 3 km east of Löhlbach , a northern part of the municipality of Haina , to whose territory the mountain mainly belongs. The border to Bad Wildungen , whose southwestern district Hundsdorf is around 1.5 km (each as the crow flies ) north-northeast of the summit, runs over the eastern flank .

The Eder tributary Wesebach rises on the Kleine Aschkoppe ( 606.8  m ), the western foothills of the Große Aschkoppe . The source of the Gehlinger Bach, the first right-hand tributary of the Wohra , lies on the Hain (approx.  570  m ), a south-westerly foothill of the mountain . The Schwalm tributary Urff rises a little north of the mountain .

Watershed

Over the south (west) foot of the Great Aschkoppe runs a section of the very elongated Rhine-Weser watershed , which changes its direction from south-north (from Vogelsberg ) to east-west (to the Rothaargebirge ). For example, while the water of the Gehlinger Bach mostly flows in a south-westerly direction over the Wohra , Ohm and Lahn to the Rhine , the water of the Urff flows mainly in a north-easterly direction via Schwalm , Eder and Fulda to the Weser .

Natural allocation

The Große Aschkoppe belongs to the natural spatial main unit group West Hessian mountain and sink country (No. 34) in the main unit Kellerwald (344) to the natural area Mittelkellerwald (344.1).

Transport links and hiking

The federal road 253 runs in the Hundsdorf – Löhlbach section about 1.3 km northwest in an east-northeast-west -south- west direction past the Great Aschkoppe, over whose east flank in the Hundsdorf– Hüttenrode section the Diemel-Eder-Weg runs.
