The Great Sonnleitstein is 1639  m above sea level. A. high mountain in the Mürzsteg Alps , and the main massif of the Sonnleitstein group .

Location and character of the mountain

The mountain rises in the area of the market town of Schwarzau im Gebirge in southern Lower Austria and the village of Altenberg an der Rax in northeast Styria, which belongs to Neuberg an der Mürz . It lies between Gippel-Göller-Zug in the north and Rax and Schneealpe in the south.

The Sonnleitstein forms an elongated, east-west striking massif, which extends from the Naßwaldtal to the uppermost Mürz valley. To the north it is separated from the train of the slightly lower Donnerkogel by the line Neuwald - Graßgrabenbach - Waldeben (with Hüttenkogel  1401  m ) - Schwarzriegelbach via Heufuss - Naßwald . South line Naßwald forms - Naßbach / Wasseralmbach over Hinternaßwald and Wasseralm - Kreuzsattel  (1363/ 1330  m above sea A.. ) - Ameiswiesbach - Cold Mürz - Neuwald the demarcation of the Rax and Schneealp-Vorgipfeln.

Summit construction of the Großer Sonnleitstein

The ridge consists of (east to west) the Vogelkirchen ( 996  m above sea level ), the Rauchkogel (approx.  1260  m ), the Kudelmauer (summit  1352  m ), the double summit made of the actual Großer Sonnleitstein ( 1639  m above sea level) . ) and the northeastern neighboring Kleiner Sonnleitstein (approx.  1400  m ), to the south of these upstream Ohnemoaßkogel ( 1454  m above sea level ), Lettigkogel ( 1309  m above sea level ) and the high valley of the Amaiswies, and further west an unnamed summit with 1519  m , the Glatzetem Kogel  ( 1594  m above sea level ) and the Grassgrabenhöhe ( 1474  m above sea level ). The Mitterschwarzriegel  ( 1303  m above sea level ) is located north of the Schwarzriegelbachtal on the Kalteck (Sonnleitsattel ).

The summit region of the Großer Sonnleitstein, which is located on the Schwarzau municipality, consists of a narrow, rocky ridge. It has rugged flanks and breaks off almost vertically to the north with rock faces in places. Viewed from the narrow side, the Großer Sonnleitstein appears as an elegant horn and is therefore also referred to as the “most beautiful summit of Vienna's local mountains”. The summit structure (with a small wooden cross) also towers above the top conifers on the rocky ridge and therefore offers a comprehensive panorama. From east to south, the three neighboring large limestones of the Hochschneeberg , the Raxalpe and Schneealpe, dominate. To the west, if the conditions are good, the view extends to the Großer Priel , almost 120 kilometers away.

geology

The train still belongs to the Schneeberg cover , with Wetterstein limestone in the summit region and Wetterstein dolomite at the base. The Wetterstein limestone forms the characteristic summit of the Großer Sonnleitstein and the other various rock gaps and walls, often called the “wall” here (Kudelmauer, White Wall, Grassgrabenmauer am Glatzeten Kogel).

natural reserve

The Sonnleitstein massif belongs to the Rax – Schneeberg nature reserve on the Lower Austrian side and to the Mürzer Oberland nature park on the Styrian side (Veitsch, Schnee, Raxalpe nature reserve). A small area between Amaiswies and Wasseralmbach is part of the FFH area Northeast Rim Alps .

Ascent routes

Despite its beautiful panorama, the Großer Sonnleitstein has remained a quiet, rarely visited summit to this day. The remoteness and difficult public accessibility of the starting point in Hinternaßwald contribute to this, as does the lack of refuges on the entire mountain range and the sometimes steep ascent routes.

The Großer Sonnleitstein can be reached from the parking lot in Hinternaßwald via two marked paths:

  • On the forest road to the north of the Wasseralm , then over the steep Franz-Jonas-Steig through the Oselgraben to a small plateau at Betriegel . Continue uphill through the southern flank of the Großer Sonnleitstein, finally very steeply from the southwest to the summit. Walking time: about 2½ hours.
  • On the forest road that follows the former Kaisersteig to the Loskögerl , then steeply to the northwest to the Amais-Wies-Hütte (an unmanaged forestry hut belonging to the City of Vienna). In many bends to the summit ridge, then in a long traverse to the east until it joins the Franz-Jonas-Steig and finally to the summit. Walking time: 2½ to 3 hours.

The climbs are not difficult ; the uppermost section over the steep, rocky southern flank requires some surefootedness .
