history
It was assumed that the name Great Means to the extensive heathland area in Steinfeld between the communities Eggendorf, Ebenfurth, Pottendorf, Blumau and Sollenau comes from the demarcation between Styria and Austria. Even today, the heather area is not a settlement area. On May 24th, 1192 the Babenberg Duke Leopold V was from the Hohenstaufen Emperor Heinrich VI. enfeoffed with Styria and founded the city of Wiener Neustadt , while the border between Austria and Styria shifted south to the Semmering Pass .
The approx. 20 km² large heather area is the largest dry grassland area in Europe. Most of the area is a restricted military area and is therefore not accessible.
