The elementary and middle school Memmingen-Amendingen , until 2011 elementary school Amendingen is located in the Memmingen part of the municipality Amendingen . It consists of a primary and a middle school . The association school is the largest middle school in the city of Memmingen. She became known nationwide in 1979 when a teacher slapped a student and this was tolerated by the Bavarian Supreme Court with reference to common law . This ruling led to a change in the law in Bavaria that finally abolished corporal punishment.

Description of the school

The building of the Amendingen elementary school.

For school district elementary school Amendingen include Memminger districts Amendingen and Vas (from class 1) and the district Steinheim and the communities Buxheim , Heimertingen , Fellheim and Pless (grades 5-9). Around 566 students go to school; the college comprises 49 teachers. The proportion of students without German citizenship is around 16%. With the exception of a three-course year, the primary school is two-course, while the secondary school is three-course. There is also a middle-aged train from 7th to 10th grade. A full-day class has been new since the 2008/09 school year, but not as usual from the 5th, but in a 7th grade on the Middle-Reife train.

Founding time

One of the first reliable mentions of the school relates to the years 1808–1810. After the state sovereignty was taken over by the Kingdom of Bavaria , the new properties were taken up by commissioners and documented as so-called possession versions. There was probably a local school much earlier. However, the sources are very thin. The schoolhouse, a small brick building, stood next to today's Sparkasse in Amendingen. Around 50 students from grades one to seven were taught there in a single class. After the number of students increased, the formerly single-class school was divided into two levels. The “small school” with the first and second grade students was temporarily located in the old sacristan's house next to the church . The “big school” with the third to seventh grade students remained in the old brick building.

School at the Schulsteige 1923–1964

The first large school in Amendingen was built during the inflationary period under the mayor of the time, Johann Dirr. Dirr had a plan drawn up that was generous for the circumstances of the community at that time, which the local council approved in principle, but rejected because of the unaffordable construction cost. Dirr stuck to the plan and implemented it at his own expense. He started building the school on his own property. Due to the ongoing devaluation of money and the late payments for tactical reasons, the construction became cheaper and cheaper. When it was completed in 1923, it turned out that the most expensive thing about building the school was the facility, which had to be paid for with the new Rentenmark . The school was renovated for the first time in 1949. Due to the increase in the number of residents after the war, space in the school, previously described as "excessively large", became tight. In 1954 the school was expanded with a third classroom. At that time there were a total of three teachers working there. A few years later, another hall in a barrack-like style followed. Plans to further enlarge the school were given up in favor of a new building elsewhere, and the kindergarten was housed in the building of the previous school. The name of the street still reminds of the school at the time.

Plans from specialist architects were obtained, with the location issue in particular being associated with particular difficulties. Such a large area could not be acquired by farmers in the favorable location, and consideration had to be given to their existence, which was not to be endangered. After a long search, a piece of land owned by Bürger- & Engelbräu AG on the eastern edge of the village was finally chosen, the location of which was recommended in a government report. Particularly praiseworthy was the fact that the surrounding water protection zone and the sports field guarantee that the immediately adjacent properties are not built on and that the unobstructed view of the green landscape is maintained. The owners were not averse to selling the property, but backed off over tax concerns. However, after two years of negotiations, the municipality, firmly determined to buy, was able to complete the acquisition in 1964, after even threatening expropriation in the meantime . This cleared the way for the largest building project in Amendinger's history to date.

At a cost of around two million German marks a school center was created with an eight-year elementary school, including gym. Construction began in October 1964. Almost two years later, on July 16, 1966, the new building was inaugurated. In addition to specialist rooms, it comprised nine classrooms with a capacity of around 200 students, which meant that year classes could now also be formed. Shortly after completion, however, an expansion would have been necessary, as the school became an association school and the number of pupils rose rapidly as a result. In addition, after the incorporation in 1972, the community became a popular immigration area with brisk construction activity. The new school building was already much too small; therefore, alternative rooms had to be created. A pavilion was set up in the schoolyard, in which some classes were temporarily accommodated. At times there were up to twelve classes in school buildings in other districts and in Buxheim. Due to the lack of space, it was considered, among other things, to redistribute the school district and make the school accessible only to students from Amendingen or to divide different classes among the schools in the city of Memmingen. But this was rejected by the population and politicians.

After frequent and urgent demonstrations of the school space shortage, the new school building was finally approved in 1984. The basis of the planning concept for the extension was the approved spatial program of the government of Swabia from September 1985. According to this program, about 1220 square meters of main usable area were available for the extension. The extension was connected to the existing break hall in the east and connected with two wings in a north-south direction via an entrance hall. This required some modifications to the existing building, such as opening the break hall to the east. In addition, long overdue renovation work was carried out on the old building. The flat roof construction, which had become leaky, was replaced by a gently sloping roof structure with a tile covering. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on May 13, 1986. Despite the long and harsh winter of 1986/1987 and the constant rain in the summer, the school was able to be handed over to its destination on time for the start of the school year on November 20, 1987. The building had a total of 7.1 million German marks tasted. The new school building provided space for all 421 students; The primary school was housed in the old building and the secondary school in the new building.

As early as 1996, additional space-creating construction measures were necessary: eight more classrooms and specialist rooms were added to the north side of the first extension. An M-class was formed for the first time in the 1999/2000 school year , and in 2003 pupils took the secondary school leaving certificate for the first time . In 2002, students, teachers and parents jointly expanded the playground on the north side. Just one year later, another project was initiated in cooperation with the parents with the expansion of the northern attic as a lunchtime care room. As a result, lunch care could be offered at the school from the 2003/2004 school year. The groundbreaking ceremony for the extension of the gym took place on August 5th, 2008, which cost almost two million euros. After a year of construction, the extension was inaugurated on July 30, 2009. As part of the Bavarian school reform of the secondary schools, the school was converted from a primary school into a primary and secondary school on August 1, 2011 .

Watschen judgment

In 1979 the school moved into the focus of the German public. A Amend Inger teacher had a student because of his behavior a slap missed. The student reported the teacher and the Memmingen district court sentenced him to a fine of 1,800 marks. The process continued up to the Bavarian Supreme Court . This revised the first judgment and acquitted the teacher. The reason was that corporal punishment was forbidden in the General School Regulations (AschO) from 1973, but since it was not a formal law, but an ordinance, the "customary right to punish teachers except Force to be set ". This “legal revival” of corporal punishment met with a great media response. In the same school year, the Bavarian state parliament passed a law that finally banned corporal punishment.

Architecture and buildings

The school wing is divided into four construction phases. The old building with kitchen and gym was completed in 1966. The primary school students are housed in the classrooms of the old building. In the two wings in north-south direction, which were completed in 1987, and the second extension on the north side from 1996, the middle school and all specialist rooms are housed. The school has 25 classrooms, all of which were occupied in the 2008/2009 school year. In addition, there is an administration wing, group and specialist rooms for computer science, physics, works, textile work, art, music and housekeeping, and an extensive library for teachers and students. In 2003, a lunchtime care room for the primary school students was built on the top floor, which was partly built by the parents themselves.

One and a half gyms are available for physical education. All halls are occupied every day. In the small part of the gym, however, sports can only be practiced to a limited extent, so that some work groups in the sports area had to be outsourced to the Steinheim gym . In 2009 another single gym was built as an extension. The outdoor sports facility is located in the immediate vicinity of the school. The primary school's indoor swimming pool is available for two hours each week.

A school café was set up to take care of the main school students at lunchtime. Up to 50 pupils have lunch there. In addition, students and teachers offer inexpensive meals that are prepared in the school kitchen. The school has two playgrounds. One of them was created in a natural way in an annual project by students, parents and teachers. In the other there is a fountain and a horse sculpture created by the Memmingen sculptor Max Pöppel .

Promotion of social skills

The primary school Amendingen participates in the buddy project in order to take active action against violence and bullying among the pupils and to prevent them. Schoolchildren take on sponsorships for younger classmates, help others with their learning, act as mediators or get involved in kindergartens or retirement homes , for example . In the primary level, the Faustlos curriculum is used to prevent violence and aggressive behavior . Since the school year 2000/2001, pupils in the 4th to 9th grade have been trained as school disputes within the framework of a working group .

School social work

The school social work at the Amendingen primary school was expanded from March 2002 and is managed by the school social worker. This is funded and financed by the city of Memmingen in cooperation with the SKM Catholic Association for Social Services Memmingen and Unterallgäu e. V . School social work mainly uses methods of individual help and social group work. The pedagogue sees herself in the counseling process as a conversation partner for those seeking advice (pupils, parents, teachers) and works out alternative possible solutions with them. The aim of the discussions is not to treat the person seeking advice in isolation, but also to include the people involved in the conflict area. We work together with all persons who are relevant for school and socio-educational work at authorities, institutions and advice centers.

All-day class on the M train

With the school year 2008/2009, a full-day class for the seventh grade of the Middle-Reife train was introduced as a model test. Higher performing students should have the chance of better supervision and support. In addition, practical subjects such as bookkeeping and CAD are offered. Through a weekly three-hour differentiation in the subjects of mathematics and German, targeted support is to be provided. English is taught in four hours per week. Two project hours in the afternoon are primarily intended to provide physical compensation and encourage the students to exercise through changing offers such as self-defense, gymnastics, games, football or sports such as golf and fishing. This also happens in cooperation with external providers and associations.

Reading sponsorship and school library

The primary school Amendingen has a school library with over 3000 books. The reading offer is expanded and supplemented with new acquisitions with financial support from the parents' council. Once a week, two volunteer reading mentors come to the school to read texts and play reading games in small groups with primary school children. Since 2002 the school has been participating in the Antolin project, a web-based program to promote reading in schools.

Working groups and projects

The school offers a large number of working groups that can be used by the students in their free time. Examples of this are the school newspaper , CAD courses, rope skipping , supervision of the school library , IT courses, accounting courses, school paramedics . In addition, projects are organized at irregular intervals, such as the performance of a musical , which is usually done in cooperation with the local music association, a sports day or the project Together , in which high school students bake, do handicrafts or play theater for a day with primary school students.

Pen pal

For several years now, students at the school have been in correspondence with students at St. Michael's Lutheran School in Richville , Michigan , USA. The city of Memmingen has a historical connection to Richville: Two people from Memmingen founded the town around 1850, which today only has about 300 inhabitants but a large school with several hundred students. First, fourth grade students wrote letters to Richville in German; There they were translated by older people who could still read German and answered in English by the American students. However, there are fewer and fewer residents in Richville who speak German and can help translate the letters. So the idea arose that the Amendingen students write in English. Since elementary school students were not eligible for this, pen pals are now maintained by the 5th and 6th grade students.

School newspaper keyhole

The school newspaper working group was launched in 1996. Since then, over 40 issues of the school newspaper have appeared under the name “ Schlüsselloch ”. Three to four issues appear every year with a print run of around 150 copies. The school newspaper is produced and printed entirely at the school. Current and previous editions are made available free of charge on the school's website.
