history

The builder and the time of construction are still unknown today, but a stone fortification may have served the Hallgraves as a residence as early as the 12th century. In 1196, Reichenhall and Gruttenstein were destroyed by the Archbishop of Salzburg. He had the so-called Hallburg built on the nearby Streitbichl to demonstrate his power over Reichenhall. The Hallburg did not exist for long, however, and in the dispute with the Archbishop of Salzburg, the Bavarian Duke began to rebuild Gruttenstein in 1218. Although the archbishop demanded the razing of the complex several times and even got it right, Gruttenstein survived this dispute and the Bavarian duke consolidated his power in Reichenhall. From the 13th century, Gruttenstein served as the official residence of the ducal Bavarian civil servant, who from there administered the Reichenhall nursing court. Now the facility was given a representative character as well as a military one. Therefore, some parts of the castle were rebuilt and made more homely with large windows. That is why Gruttenstein is often referred to as a castle .

The castle, which is now privately owned, has been extensively renovated since the beginning of 2007 and is to be reopened to the public after the renovation work has been completed.

description

Gruttenstein looks very squat due to the lack of towers, the highest point is the shield wall running from east to west , which was previously part of the city wall . The three-storey complex with stately living rooms in the north wing surrounds the castle courtyard. Access is through a low gatehouse , which was previously secured by a gate and portcullis . It is believed that there was also a drawbridge there in the Middle Ages .
