Gunhard Mattes (born September 22, 1957 in Zurich ) is a Swiss musician and conductor .

life and work

Gunhard Mattes grew up in modest circumstances in the city of Zurich . At the age of 15 he founded a chamber orchestra . Trained as an oboist with André Raoult in Zurich and with Heinz Holliger at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg , he completed his studies with a teaching diploma, a concert qualification examination and a concert diploma. In 1973 Gunhard Mattes gave his first solo concert. In 1975 he was engaged at the Zurich Opera House . In 1981 the " Orchester de la Suisse Romande " appointed him (solo) oboist, later he was a. a. Solo oboist in the Camerata Zürich under Räto Tschupp , oboist in the Collegium Musicum under Paul Sacher and solo oboist in the Stadtorchester Winterthur under Franz Welser-Möst .

Gunhard Mattes studied conducting with Michael Dixon in Hamburg from 1993 to 1995 and took master classes with Myung-Whun Chung and Hans Graf in Vienna. In addition to various conducting engagements, he was the initiator, conductor and artistic director of the INSO Lemberg orchestra in 1998 , whose development and development he devoted himself to until 2010. His aim was to support young, talented musicians and to secure a livelihood for them in the INSO Lemberg orchestra. With this orchestra he gave over 20 concerts in the Tonhalle Zurich, the Stravinsky Auditorium in Montreux and in the KKL Luzern. He has conducted on tours in Germany, Poland , Luxembourg , Ukraine , Switzerland and China . Mattes gave concerts and ballet productions at the Lemberg Opera House, created workshops for children and schools and was the initiator and organizer of festivals. At the invitation of Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko and his wife Kataryna, he conducted a charity concert in January 2007 at the National Opera in Kiev . In December 2008 he received a personal letter of appreciation from Kataryna Yushchenko, the First Lady of Ukraine, and a personal award for his humanitarian commitment from the Ukraina 3000 charity.

With the orchestra INSO Lemberg, Mattes recorded the soundtrack for the Swiss film “ Ricordare Anna ” (2005; with Mathias Gnädinger in the leading role). He also recorded various CDs : piano concertos by Franz Xaver Mozart , Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Ludwig van Beethoven , Robert Schumann , Vivaldi in Toscana, Italian oboe concerts and many others.

In 2009 the Swiss filmmaker Gabriele Köstler-Kull made a documentary about Mattes and his orchestra INSO Lemberg with the title “An orchestra dies”. The film was shown in the cinema and was presented at the International Film Festival in Biarritz (Festival International de Programmes Audiovisuels).

As a guest conductor, Gunhard Mattes led, among other things, in the Zurich Chamber Orchestra , where he was also jointly responsible for the conception of concerts for children and young people, the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich (for the first time in 2004), the Zurich Symphony Orchestra, the Aargau Symphony Orchestra and the China National Symphony Orchestra (first in 2004) and the National Symphony Orchestra of Moldova.

He opened international festivals in Ettelbrück (L) and Lemberg (UA) and participated in the «Virtuosi», «Festival for Early Music» and «Contrasts» festivals, as well as in choir concerts, children's concerts, benefit events, ballet productions at the Lemberg Opera House and with CD recording. In 2003 he directed the world premiere of the “Caecilia, Virgine Romana” fair by Arvo Pärt at the “Contrasts” festival in Lviv , with whom he also has a personal friendship. In 2004 Gunhard Mattes was named «Artist of the Year» in Lviv for his musical services.

Mattes has been the musical director of the Gelterkinden Orchestra and the Engstringen Men's Choir since August 2011 . In 2013 he founded “The Women's Orchestra of Switzerland”, which gave its debut concert in Zurich in August 2013 under his musical direction.

Mattes lives in Bremgarten AG .
