Gustav Gunz

Gustav Georg Gunz (born October 26, 1831 in Gaunersdorf ; † December 11, 1894 in Frankfurt am Main ) was an Austro-German doctor and royal Prussian chamber singer ( tenor ).

Life

Gustav Gunz studied medicine at the University of Vienna and was in the years 1857-1859 assistant physician at the General Hospital in Vienna. In addition to his medical profession itself Gunz trained as a singer and had his debut in the Gran Mass by Franz Liszt . He then gave up his medical profession and sang at the Vienna Court Opera (1859–1861), at the royal stage in Hanover (1861–1888) and at Her Majesty's Theater in London (1864–1870). In London he performed with the "Swedish nightingale" Jenny Lind . Gunz deepened his vocal training in Paris in 1862 with François Delsarte . From 1888 he taught himself as a professor at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt am Main. It was there that he sang together with Adelina Patti in Rossini's Barber of Seville on the Frankfurt Fürstentag in 1863 .

Gunz was highly valued as an oratorio and lieder singer and made numerous guest tours. He was responsible for the distribution of hitherto largely unknown songs by Franz Schubert . He also sang in 1865 at the Vienna premiere of the St. Matthew Passion of Johann Sebastian Bach the evangelists . His main roles were among others the Tamino , Florestan and the Belmonte .
