Höflein , in Upper Sorbian Wudwor , is a village in the center of the East Saxon district of Bautzen , which has been part of the Räckelwitz community since 1973 . It has about 120 inhabitants and is part of the core settlement area of the Sorbs . Most of the population speaks Sorbian as their mother tongue.

The Sorbian name of the place means something like "Vorwerk, expansion".

geography

Höflein is the southernmost part of the municipality and is located to the west above the Klosterwasser valley at 163 meters above sea level. NN at the Schmeckwitzer Bach. It belongs to the "Oberland" ( Horjany ) of the former monastery maintenance of St. Marienstern . The neighboring towns are Räckelwitz in the northeast, Caseritz in the southeast, Kuckau in the south and Schmeckwitz in the northwest. The area drops to the east towards the Klosterwasser, while west of Höflein it rises to 191 meters. The place is located 18 kilometers northwest of the district town of Bautzen and ten kilometers east of Kamenz.

After the settlement, Höflein is a round hamlet that has expanded like a square . The old fiefdom is located on the northeast edge of the settlement. The group of houses Mostach ("on the bridges") is located at the bridge over the monastery water, which already served as a river crossing for the Via Regia and can be seen from the Kuckauer Schanze.

The place is first recorded in 1301 as Hovelin . The forms Hevel (1590) or Höffgen (1617) are mentioned later, among others . In the 17th and 18th centuries, the manor was part of the Räckelwitz manor and the St. Marienstern monastery in Panschwitz-Kuckau. Later the Landvogtei Bautzen also had shares in Höflein.

One of the plans for the Saxon Northeast Railway saw a route from Kleinwelka to Kamenz u. a. via Höflein and in connection with it the construction of a train station near the settlement. However, due to financial difficulties, the project was abandoned.

Until April 1, 1973 Höflein was an independent rural community. In the context of the conflict over the closure of the Crostwitz Middle School, the Ministry of Culture proposed the establishment of a central Sorbian Middle School in Höflein. However, that was refused.

For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 139 inhabitants for the place in the 1880s; all of them were Sorbs. In 1956 Ernst Tschernik counted a Sorbian-speaking population of only 62.7% in the community, due to a. due to the influx of resettlers from the former eastern areas.

In 1910 Höflein had 148 inhabitants, in 1964 there were already 234. Since then the number of inhabitants has fallen significantly again.

The inhabitants are traditionally mostly of the Catholic denomination; the place is parish to Crostwitz. The Protestant portion has belonged to the Schmeckwitz parish since 2001 and was previously parish in Uhyst . The last religious affiliation figures are from 1925. At that time, 159 Catholics (76%) and 47 Protestants (22.4%) out of 209 inhabitants.

Economy and Infrastructure

There are several small businesses in Höflein, including a nursery and a concrete block trade.

In the district, about 700 meters from the village on Klosterwasser, the largest sewage treatment plant of the "Am Klosterwasser" association has been located since 1997. The favorable location between the larger towns of Crostwitz, Räckelwitz and Panschwitz-Kuckau makes it possible for wastewater from eleven villages in four communities to be treated here.

The district road from Crostwitz to Nebelschütz leads directly through the village. Local roads connect Höflein with the neighboring towns. The next entrance on Autobahn 4 (Dresden-Görlitz) is Uhyst am Taucher (7 km).

The bus routes 195 (Bautzen-Crostwitz-Räckelwitz- Horka ), 196 (Bautzen-Crostwitz- Nebelschütz - Zerna ) and 186 (to Kamenz) run through Höflein.

Höflein is a stop on the Easter rider's annual route from Panschwitz to Crostwitz. In addition, the place is on the Way of St. James . The Sorbian Folklore Ensemble Höflein is regionally known .

In the center of the village there is a memorial for the fallen soldiers of the First World War with Sorbian and German inscriptions. Several wayside crosses with Sorbian inscriptions testify to the Catholic faith of the majority of the population.
