The complex of the Hünenburg

The Hünenburg is a rampart east of downtown Meschede on a mountain ledge north of the Ruhr . The castle dates from between the 9th and 10th centuries. Small finds are dated to the 9th century. It is not mentioned in the Mescheder documents. The Antiquities Commission for Westphalia carried out several excavations at the Hünenburg between 1909 and 1914. The castle had two moats, which can still be seen today and are accessible via a circular hiking trail. The outer bering is 2.8 hectares and the inner one is 0.8 hectares. The inner castle has a length of around 120 meters in a north-south direction and a width of around 65 meters in a west-east direction. The castle had five gates, a cistern and a tower. Remnants of buildings on the inside of the core work wall come from a later construction phase. They indicate that it was not just a refuge, but a permanently occupied castle of a nobleman. The castle could have been the ancestral seat of the noble family who later called themselves Count von Werl . On the site of the former outer ward now houses a barbecue.
