Ardey Castle

The ruins of Ardey Castle are located in the Ardey district of Fröndenberg in the Unna district in North Rhine-Westphalia . Only a few remains of the wall and trenches are preserved.

location

The ruins of the Höhenburg are located on a wooded mountain slope near Ostardey south of Ardeyer Straße and east of the mouth of the Ostholzbach in the Ruhr . The railway from Fröndenberg to Unna runs south below the castle .

history

The lordship of Ardey was owned by the nobleman Rabodo von Rüdenberg . With him, the male line of the Rüdenberger died out in 1170. Heirs were his sisters Wiltrud and Luitgard von Rüdenberg with their husbands, the brothers Everhard and Jonathas von Wiclon / Wicheln . They built the hilltop castle , which was first mentioned in a document in 1176, and from then on called themselves Lords of Ardey . The Jonathas lineage was last mentioned in 1318. Later the Counts of the Mark made inheritance claims.

legend

The legendary knight Embert , possibly Count Engelbert III , probably comes from this family . According to legend, he had to flee from the besieged fortress. In a hurry he threw his treasures into the fountain, which reached down to the Ruhr mirror. The ruins of the castle captured by the enemy buried well and treasure. According to the legend, a light burns over the treasure at night, and during the day a hen and her chicks guard the place.
